It took place in a pioneer or frontier town. They used flintlocks and dueling rapiers against sabretoothed cats. There were domesticated mammoths. The town owner was a miser. The innkeeper seemed like a strict old retired femme-paladin. The BBEG was some kind of demon-possessed gargoyle.
'Thirteenth Child' by Patricia C. Wrede?

I seem to remember a book like this that had a journey on an airship through the frozen north to find a lost miner (or miner's dad?). Same book?

That sounds like Cherry Priest's series. It's an alternative history where the Civil War goes on into the 1890s and there was a zombie apocalypse in Seattle, Washington. "Boneshaker" is book 1 of the series. I only got about halfway through the first book before it was due back at the library, but it was pretty good. I'll have to finish it sometime.

Funny, I'm reading boneshaker now! The book I was thinking of I read probably 3 years ago, and was another entirely. The field of steampunk is quite full!

The Burning City by Niven and Pournell
Sounds like what I remember from this novel some 10 years ago.

It dealt with a small town on a frontier. It seemed to have Victorian mores, Renaissance technology (rapiers & flintlocks), and Ice Age animals (domesticated mammoths, wild smilodons).
Miser landlord, I think one of the main characters was a scribe who sat on a really tall stool, another was an older woman who ran an inn or tavern.
