The main problem with BMI is it does not take your body composition into account.
I think a better question to ask is, "What is the best percent body fat?"
Followed quickly by the question, "What is your cholesterol level?"
We all know muscle weighs more than fat, and BMI maps a highly muscular person, even with low percent body fat, as being overweight.
So, What is the best percent body fat for man, and for a woman?

Apparently my whole workplace is 'overweight' - fittest bunch of overweight people on Earth.
I sincerely hope there are no Gravity Whores .
Using up more than their fair share of gravity. ;-)

105 pounds for first five feet of height, 6 pounds for every inch after.
Add ten percent of the above figure for large frame. Finally, add ten pounds for being an American ^_^.
Thus, my "ideal" weight at six feet tall is 204.7 or 205 pounds. My current weight is 230 pounds.
You should be adding 5lb per point of physical strength with the base of +2. So your stength is 7.

Yeah BMI is BS, it doesn't even make sense, When I was in college I ran to work daily, could bench 300lbs, and was in better shape than most people and BMI said that I was dangerously obese at 5'11 and 225lbs, the fact that I could pick up a person heavier than me over my head didn't matter.
Body fat % is the only scale that counts IMO BMI doesn't even give you a fair average, hell my doctor told me that in order to get to the point that I was within my BMI I'd have to stop working out and then do risky weight loss diets because otherwise I'd just replace the muscle I had with fat.
When a doctor tells you to ignore BMI, it makes you seriously doubt the veracity of it as a guideline.

Amen, man. I was a thrower for track & field in high school, and weighed about 200-210 from lifting weights. Had people tell me that all the time. Now I'm about 180, and am in much worse shape. BMI is b***&!$%.

BMI is a joke. I wanted to donate eggs to spread hilarious genes while keeping with the refusal to have kids. Turns out I have a minimum weight limit (140 pounds, not allowed to go below that) set by a doctor based off of my history of anorexia. And in order to fit the BMI necessary to donate eggs (~26, so the lower end of "overweight") I'd need to hit that lower weight limit and hit it hard.
So I looked up the BMI ranges for my height. Turns out when I weighed 95 lbs and was digesting my body in horrible starvation I had a totally normal BMI! I should be striving for that again! Yes, because "healthy" means exhaling the noxious byproducts of organ digestion.
BMI isn't just a joke, it's a cruel joke. An insult. Even a dangerous lie.[/rant]
