So, recently, in running the adventure "Under the City" by Gabor Lux - an EXCELLENT adventure, though with some minor puzzle issues that I had to improvise - I had a partial party wipe.

The group's 'pocket archmage', an Illusionist/Rogue/Arcane Trickster of no small talent but with truly ludicrous arcane equipment (including a Staff of the Magi, which shall soon become relevent to this tale of woe) by the name of Gnimish was dominated. Additionally, the group's tertiary fighter acquired a +2 sword of berserking. As you might expect, this led to a genuine World Class Charlie Foxtrot.

The group split at a staircase, with part of the group having set off a trap and then having to medic up while the rest proceeded forward to 'safety'. Instead, Gnimish set an ambush and as the berserking fighter started laying into the group's paladin the dominated wizard sprung his part of the fun. After using the Staff to summon a Nalfeshnee, Gnimish charged into the fray (now partially enveloped in an obscuring mist spell) and snapped the Staff of the Magi with a titter of mind-boogied anarchic glee.

The party affected by this retributive strike were: The Paladin, The Secondary Fighter, The Tertiary Fighter, The Oracle and of course Gnimish.

Everyone else saw the flash of light, but was well out of range.

So, with this all said, what was YOUR favourite (or perhaps least favourite) instance of a retributive strike in game?
