Joining a faction

Serpent's Skull

My pc's have been really secretive with the information they found in Smuggler's shiv and hasn't shared anything with the other castaways. Furthermore they are determined to start their own expedition and is reluctant to ally with anyone else.

Is it possible for the pc's to start their own expedition or is the rest of the AP dependent upon the players to join a faction?

How likely is it that all the other factions will find out about the secrets the Pc's learned in Smuggler's shiv if the pc's don't share this information with anyone?

I assume the other factions might launch their own expeditions to Smuggler's shiv, but I see no reason for them to do so since my pc's have been tight lipped about anything they found there.

I do not see why they cannot start thier own expediation; however, from reading 'Race to the Ruins,' the factions will give the PC bonus while in Saveth-Yhi as well as resources to draw from once they arrive. If they don't Ally, they don't get these. Also, I would gander the other factions would all like to get rid of the PC interlopers. I think the PC will find it pretty tough going in the next adventure.

Well, In my Campaign the Sargavan Government is going to send a Paladin of Imodae and party to the Smuggler's Shiv to confirm the Lighthouse is operational and claim it as a base for thier custom ships. They will find the cave under the Cannibal camp and the Temple of Zura. Without needing to deal with the traps and monster's they should breeze through these, thus finding out the secret of the Island and about Saveth-Yhi.

The other factions will all have an 'ear,' in the government and thus plan thier own expediation.

You may want to give the PCs a head start, but eventually the others will follow.

Just my ideas.

Just keep in mind that there is going to be some interest in the PCs as they managed to survive being stranded on Smuggler's Shiv, so when folks notice that these local celebrities (who don't seem to have much in common other than being on the same ship) start gathering supplies for a long expidition (horses, rations for 50 days, etc) that people are going to take notice.

And the more tight lipped they are about where they are going will actually generate more interest in their expedition. The respective factions will most likely 'tap' the other castaways into a secondary expidition to Smuggler's Shiv to find what the PCs found.

Another question to keep in mind, are the PCs planning to take the other castaways on their expedition? If they are they would want to know where they are going (whether they get told the truth or not is up the party), but being told nothing they would probably decline.

Could the party do their own expedition. Yes.
Is it more work for you as the DM. Yes.
Does this impact the following adventures... dunno (it will have some impact on their eventual base camp, but how significant that is... /shrug)

While the assumption is that the other factions find out about the site, if the PCs start their own expedition on their own without telling anyone else, they can bypass this entire element of the AP if they're REALLY quiet about what they're doing. This won't change much of the AP... but when they get to Saventh-Yhi, they won't have a handy support group to sell stuff/buy stuff from, to safely rest, or to aid in exploring the city. Basically—going it alone to Saventh-Yhi is more dangerous, but it shouldn't be impossible.

And eventually, word WILL get out, especially if the PCs start to sell lots of weird artifacts from unknown jungle ruins back in civilization.

Played the first session of Racing to ruin and I managed to convince my players to seek aid and steer them back on track. As for now they have joined the Pathfinder faction after Gelik nagged them for several days. In the end the groups leader, a paladin of Irori found the Pathfinders to be the least evil of the factions.
