I haven't sat down to work over their mechanics yet, but I do have them as small enclaves originating and mostly found in Nex and Osirion. I'm still torn between the idea of having them be creations of Nethys before or during his rise to godhood and having them be the result of one of the archwizard Nex's experiments(either purposefully or accidentally). I've left it vague for now, and have just been running with the idea that the illumians themselves aren't sure where their true origins lay, which has caused a bit of factionalism to grow amongst them:
Scions of Nethys and the Children of Nex, who both see themselves as the natural inheritors of power in either Osirion or Nex, and eventually the world for its own sake.
The Pharaonists who consider themselves to have been created to help safeguard and maintain Osirions pharaonic traditions, with themselves as an honored servitor/advisor caste.
And the more traditional take on Illumians that are usually found in Nex, who are heavy into exploring magic and its integration into their flesh and culture in order to better understand their place in the world, and to protect their own race and culture from persecution. Kind of like Henry Kuttner's Mutant stories, these guys tend to self-police a lot in order to keep the race's PR up, frequently working to stamp out and quiet troublemakers like the more extreme members of the Children of Nex.
Nethys and Pharasma are their most popular deities, although keketars are exalted in some circles as well, to the point that there are small cults dedicated to specific keketars that have shown an interest in the race's development.(kind of filling the place of the gibbering cabals)
