Messageboards' Most Recent Posts Sidebar

As I was waiting on the forums to become available, I had a thought on something that might save at least horsepower on the back-end and also be a bit more useful to site visitors.

My suggestion would be to NOT include the Customer Service, PbP, PbP Discussion, and Forum Games threads in the list of most-recent posts for the whole site. People who are having a CS issue handled won't be looking there for it and it's really no one else's business.

Highly active PbP or FAWTLY, etc. will simply be constant fixtures on that list for long periods of time but it doesn't benefit anyone. The folks involved in such games already have RSS feeds, lists, or simply check the pages out of habit.

You can turn off the forums which you don't want to view (by clickng the traingles next to forum name), and they won't appear on the sidebar as well.

Yes, but that's really not the point I was making. The servers appear to be badly overloaded so I was suggesting another area in which it might be possible to save some database hits and clock cycles.

Gary has said he's doing some major work on the boards right now with the hopes to roll the changes as early as this next week (but not necessarily).

I agree about the CS, but the PbP community would be rather miffed at their recent posts not showing up. It would certainly annoy me.

I myself play in 3 and DM 1 PbP. Most of my players check for updates via lists or RSS rather than the site's homepage. Perhaps we are in the minority, but that's more than a handful of people who wouldn't be phased by such a change. I'm genuinely curious as to why this would be annoying.

I would miss seeing the PbP stuff in the sidebar, although I agree it's not strictly necessary to have it in there.

I pretty much never use the sidebar, so I wouldn't miss it if it were gone entirely. Especially if it helped to end the boards' sluggishness.

I've thought it would be nice to have a separate sidebar for the gaming (pbp) forums.

The recent posts box should already be filtering out any forum you've collapsed using the triangles on the main messageboards page. I'm currently testing some new code so this functionality is disabled for the time being. (ie, if you've collapsed the PbP forums those threads are going to show in the recent posts box for now.)

I hope to restore the filtering function tomorrow if all goes well with the new code.
