Apologies to Sir Elton

4th Edition

[tongue in cheek comedy, sung to the tune of "Candle in the Wind", by Elton John]

Goodbye Four E

though I never played you at all
you had the gall to hold yourself
as the answer to it all

they crawled out of the woodwork
and they yelled all over my screen
they set you on the mantle
called you the one and only game

it seems to me
your edition lasted
like a candle in the wind
never knowing
who to appeal to
though Paizo did

and I would have liked to have played you
but none of my friends did
your candle burned out long before
3.x ever did

loneliness was tough
like the toughest DC ever made
Renton called you a "superstar"
but it was nothing like MTG

even when you died
oh the grognards still hounded you
but the 4e forums had to say
"NUH UH!, LULZ, wuuut???, N00bs!1!"

it seems to me
your version lasted
like a candle in the wind
never knowing
what to make next
but Paizo did

and I would have liked to have played you
I even thought my son did
"essentials is what we play now"
"the books are all redid"

Goodbye Four E

though I never played you at all
you had the gall to call yourself
as the answer to it all

Goodbye Four E

from the old man to the 22 year old
we though you'd be something more than special
more than just our four-point-o

it seems to me
essentials has
many people much chagrined
a box showing
old school flavor
with a red lid

and I might just have to play you
buy the box, take off the lid
it's such a shame that four-point-o
is just oh so dead

and I would have liked to have played you
but none of my friends ever did
your candle burned out long before
3.x ever did

[/comedy]

In before the wind* blows out this post

So sad, and Larry Elmore's Red Dragon never got to RIP in the TSR graveyard like all the other art.

BTW, now you have me listening to the non-4e version on the youtubes.
Inspired man, inspired.

Oh, is it Friday again?

I can appreciate the trolling attempt, but where's the fun part?

The comedy tag was false advertisement.

Watch me pull a bird out my hat.

Come on guys lighten up. We don't want "4e players have no sense of humor" bandied about amongst other things.

To the OP, not bad, not bad at all.

Awwwww somebody poked the 4nthill again.

While I think continued talk of the dead horse that is 'the edition wars' is well past even the passe stage, let's give the OP his due.

The man's got quite a talent for a ditty.

Now if he could come up with an opera for the loss of Dragon and Dungeon magazines ...

If he posted something funny, I'd laugh.

Check outside your window. There aren't a bunch of children dancing around your house singing "sour-puss and grumpy-face" are there?

Just asking :)

Shrug, it wasn't that funny, but I did get a chuckle when I substituted the name Pathfinder with 4E, WOTC with Paizo, and removed the MTG references, etc., but it serves no purpose, but to get a reaction.

Basically supporters of both sides may think they are high an mighty, but humility goes a long way, as who knows what the future holds.

So what? Comedy is supposed to be funny. This was just ...poor, and I'm not going to pretend it is anything else just because you're afraid people will call you names.

No, they're too busy asking me if this thread was supposed to be funny, and why it failed at it ;p

Seemed a reasonable attempt to parody Candle in the Wind. I wasn't saying it was the funniest thing I have ever read, but it was amusing. You seemed almost to have taken offense by the "song". What I'm failing to understand is why? This post has in no way lessened my enjoyment of last weeks game of 4e and won't effect this coming weekend either I'll wager. Let's say we take the songs sentiment to heart and WotC stops making D&D full stop tomorrow. So? The game designers of 4e have already succeeded, 4e is a good RPG game, production of endless suppliments and addons are not a requirement for 4e to continue to be a great game now and in 50 years time. People still play 1e AD&D and don't seem overly concerned that (a) the designers are dead, (b) TSR is dead, or (c) that 1e is 1e and will continue to be forever. 4e like ALL editions and RPGs die ONLY when the last group in the world stops playing the game NOT when a company decides - they lost that sort of control the day thet sold the books.

I think you misunderstand. I'm not offended by the song, it simply lacks value as entertainment.

While this post did not lessen my enjoyment of any games, it did lessen my enjoyment of this board, which is why I commented. I wasted time reading this. And you might call it naive, but I hope that maybe this will get the would-be trolls to put a little bit of effort in their flaming attempts.

Ah, now I understand. I do see your point, just I thought it was refreshing to have, as you point out, a little effort in the insulting of 4e. Sort of like saying your 4 year old's picture of the sun is great when really it's not going to win any major art prizes... :)

Not that I'm implying the OP is 4 years old OR has the mental/artist capacity of a 4 year old.

Obviously it was troll bait, and I failed on an epic level, but regardless I won't support these types of posts, even to prove I have a thick skin. I understand the minority syndrome, and if I had any sense I would move on. But hell, I am as chatty as the next person.

I would be much more apt if a staunch 4E person made fun of themselves, or another system supporter made a jibe against their player base. As that tends to delflate issues people get so worked up about.

Anyhows, I return the floor.

Pretty much, the problem isn't that it was obvious troll bait or that it made fun of 4e.

The problem is that it wasn't entertaining in doing so.
