Steadfast Companion feat

Homebrew and House Rules

I’m planning to play a multiclass ranger/sorcerer/arcane archer in an upcoming campaign. I’d like to solicit feedback regarding a feat before I propose it to my gaming group. Is there a way to make it more elegant? Does the feat dovetail gracefully with existing rules? Is it too specific or restrictive? I welcome any suggestions regarding the text, as well as opinions as to whether it is under- or overpowered.

I don't think there is an existing feat in the PRPG, and I have not found a similar house rule or other suggestion. If anyone knows of a similar thread, please let me know.

Thanks!

Steadfast Companion
Your ranger levels stack with all other class levels for the purpose of determining your animal companion's Hit Dice, abilities, skills, and feats.

Prerequisite: Hunter’s bond class ability, ranger level 4th.

Benefit: Your effective druid level is equal to your class level –3 when determining your animal companion's Hit Dice, abilities, skills, and feats.

Normal: Without this feat, a ranger’s animal companion functions like the druid animal companion ability (which is part of the Nature Bond class feature), except that the ranger’s effective druid level is equal to his ranger level –3.

You dont need a feat for this, it already does it. Check the description of the animal companion in the druid entry.

"Class Level: This is the character's druid level. The druid's class levels stack with levels of any other classes that are entitled to an animal companion for the purpose of determining the companion's statistics."

This feat allows ranger levels to stack with levels of any other class(es), including those which are not entitled to an animal companion, for purposes of determining the animal companion's advancement.

Essentially, with this feat, a multiclass ranger's class level -3 is the effective druid level, in regards to his animal companion.

I believe you mean character level, as class level refers to each class independently.

Yes, I do mean character level. Thanks!

Ah, that makes alot more sense. I think there should be a cap though. Usually feats like this are like +3 to your effective level with the max your HD. I dont think a ranger 4 fighter 16 should have the same companion as a Ranger 20 with a single feat.

Seeker of Secrets already has the Boon Companion feat:

"The abilities of your animal companion or familiar are calculated as though your class were four levels higher, to a maximum bonus equal to your character level. "

The Exchange

Is this a custom made feat, or a 3.0/3.5 feat? If it's custom made and should read character level instead of class level, I'm going to have to argue that it's too good.

As Gjorbjond said, there's already a feat similar to this. My general rule of thumb (when I DM) for custom content is that I don't allow it if it's something that can already be done with existing rules.

Your bond with your animal companion or familiar is unusually close.

Prerequisites: Animal companion or familiar class ability.

Benefit: The abilities of your animal companion or familiar are calculated as though your class were four levels higher, to a maximum bonus equal to your character level. If you have more than one animal companion or familiar, choose one to receive this benefit. If you lose or dismiss an animal companion or familiar, you may apply this feat to the replacement creature.

Special: You may select this feat more than once. The effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a different animal companion or familiar.

That can also be found here.

Basically, over the course of 20 levels, your proposed feat gives you that feat up to four times, for the price of one feat.

A kind GM might allow you to take the Boon Companion feat multiple times and allow it to stack, but anything much better than that is probably going to be too good for a single feat.

That's just what I was looking for. I wasn't trying to replace or improve upon Boon Companion, I just didn't know it was already out there.

I appreciate the information. Thanks, everyone!
