A long time coming

Shackled City Adventure Path

This is exciting. After many years of having the SCAP on the shelf and running other material (including a DM change) we are getting started.
I have been perusing the material that has been posted here on Paizo and looking at some of the other things out there and am really impressed. I have a few questions that I have not seen answered, but would love to have a few people post about. I'll limit my questions to two for now, one of which I'll post here and another I'll start a new thread for.

First question: Does the newsletter work?

I have seen several versions of it and LOVE the concept.

I am currently playing through SCAP and love the newsletter. Our DM has put alot of effort into it, making up interesting news and gossip for the city. It's also nice for players to see their names in the newsletter and feel like you have a real connection with the city when you rescue it from certain doom. Our DM also puts ad's in his to give us minor discounts at shops and sometimes we go back and reread them (we have over 12 of them i think) to see if they can give us some clues as to some of the city's most important residents.

As a player i think the newsletter works and is a great idea, I can't imagine running SCAP without it. It can be alot of work for the DM but I am sure your players will enjoy it.

Liberty's Edge

As a DM running SCAP, I can say that the newsletters are a big hit. My players have commented many times how much they like them, especially when they see some mention of themselves in it. It's a little bit of extra work, but I think the payoff is worth it. The players find themselves more connected to the Cauldon community and have developed greater stakes in the welfare of the city.

I highly recommend adding them to your campaign.

Thanks for the "thumbs up" guys! I have planned to keep it a little more simple than some of the other examples I have seen out there. Time is a factor for me each week.

Did you look at the examples of newsletters that were posted for inspiration?

What did you/are you doing that is different/similar?

Liberty's Edge

I definitely use the example newsletters as inspiration. Most contain a lot of supplementary "articles" that provide additional fluff for the campaign that the characters wouldn't necessarily be exposed to through the course of the adventures. There's also a lot that's specific for the campaigns that those newsletters came from. So, it's about a 50/50 split of material that I take from the example newsletters and that I make up myself, mostly the articles that pertain to the player characters themselves.

Scarab Sages

I also just started running the AP..where do you find examples of the newsletters? I think that is a great idea.

Search the boards, I looked over at the RPGenus and I didn't see them. I'll have to doublecheck when I'm not exhausted.

I stumbled upon a link to the wikipedia shared content site. At least I think that's what it is. (I'm a computer user... just barely) I searched forever for what people reffered to as the original newsletter called Scroll and Feather, but could not find it. I was also directed to the RPGenius website, but it seems to be no longer in service, at least I could not get it to display anything.

I apologize. This is the link that I dug up for a WEALTH of info for the campaign, including some neat examples of newsletters.

Scarab Sages

Wow; that site's had a facelift, since I was there last.

I remember it having an all-black theme.
Great to see those old articles haven't been lost!

The Scroll and Feather, what a time saver! I was really excited to hand out the first few copies, and the group took to it right away. A "special edition" was made up to spotlight the group after they emerged from the dungeon with 7 citizens in tow.

I have to admit though that most of the group was horrified at the thought of giving an "interview". They wanted their characters NOT to be in the spot light! Only one player stepped up and told the groups story, so he is now being called the "leader" by the Mayors office, as well as the City Guard. The funny thing is that after shying away from doing the interview themselves, some of the others in the group who want to be "cool", and "famous" started to tease the guy who did the interview. Huh? I just have to shake my head.

To sum it up, I have to tip my hat to whomever thought up the first newsletter for this adventure path, it has been a complete success so far in my game.
