Ok,
So, I have converted Beguiler and Warmage and a couple of other classes with fixed spell lists. However, with the APG coming up, I'm considering redoing the conversions to be consistent. Here's what I'm thinking...
Spells :
Each of the 'sorcerer related' classes get's a specific number of spells known per level. Just like a sorcerer. However, because they are themed sorcerers, they get more known. So, I think I will create a fixed number of 'spells known' from the original classes as presented in the 3.5 splat books. So, for example :
Warmage : 4/13/10/10/12/7/7/8/7/6
Beguiler : 7/15/19/20/11/10/7/8/8/6
and so on.
So, for them, I think I will do the following :
Spells Known = For 0 level spells, the same as a Sorcerer. For all spells 1st level or higher, 2x sorcerer known.
Then, set up themed 'lists' like so :
Warmage :
A warmage's spells must be taken from the following list :
0 level : Any Sorcerer spell
1st Level and Higher : Any sorcerer spell of the same level that is an Evocation spell, or any spell that causes direct damage to one or more opponents or objects. Additionally, any spell that provides the target a specific combat oriented bonus (such as True Strike) may be taken.
This pretty much duplicates the original Warmage list, without making the list specific. Additionally, it allows 2 or more warmages to have different specialties (fire vs ice, for example). So they'd get at 20th level : 9/10/10/8/8/8/6/6/6/6 which is pretty close to the original spells known. It's a little lower (especially for the Beguiler) but it is also more flexible in that they can add/replace spells from new sources.
For the Beguiler :
A beguiler's spells must be taken from the following list :
0 level : Any Sorcerer spell
1st Level and Higher : Any sorcerer spell of the same level that is an Illusion or Enchantment spell. Additionally, any spell with 'Detect' in the name, and any spell that dispels magic.
Again, not a perfect match, but much more flexible. And they'd have the same spell totals as the Warmage, keeping them on an even footing.
What do you think?

The warmage mechanically was somewhere between a sorcerer and a cleric, but fluff-wise they were supposed to be trained like wizards. Personally I'd prefer a step toward wizard mechanics.
Can't comment on the beguiler, I haven't seen them in play, but I frequently hear that they alternate drastically between useless and way better than everyone else, constantly.

I never felt they were mechanically like a wizard. To me, they were much more like a very very very focused sorcerer. Basically, all their spells were drilled into them during basic training (0th level). So by the time they reached 5th level, say, they had already memorized all their spells, they just couldn't cast them until their ability to channel magic caught up.
The beguilers are very very good at sneaky magic, and so excel at any game where a really sneaky rogue would excel. They also suck in any game a rogue would suck in.
