From owls and bears came owlbears, for example. These insane arcane tinkerings warped nature, introducing new species into the fantasy world.
Magic changed the monster so that strange appearance and abilities passed from parent to offspring. The magic is in the blood, so to speak. When we look at character classes, none exemplify this idea of hereditary magic more than the sorcerer. Each sorcerer has a bloodline, and this heritage grants the sorcerer his arcane abilities.
