Hmmm... Selecting my favorite Lovecraft story is a tall-order, but I would have to say that The Hound probably tops my list.
I have a fondness for the mythology of the British Isles, and I love the spin that Lovecraft placed on the 'Black Dog' myth; the themes of history repeating itself, and the sense of a malevolent doom gradually and unstoppably drawing closer make it an excellent read.
In terms of the most memorable scene,
The two half-crazed thrill-seekers, feverishly and perversely exhume a fellow 'collector', in an Old-World cemetery filled with the evidence of ancient corruption, and oozing a palpable sense of death and decay.
Heedless of the muttered stories of the gruesome end of the former grave-robber (in fact, they revel in it!), once they breach the sanctity of his tomb, they gather like greedy children gloating over a forbidden treat, and claim the sickening jade amulet from around the occupant's bony neck, before re-filling the grave, and stealing-off into the night with their newest prize... which ultimately sealed their fate.

Well...seeing as how I make my living on and beneath the water...I would have to say my favorite Lovecraft story would have to be "Dagon"...short and sweet. As for a favorite seen? No particular seen is what I like about the story...it's the subtle way the story is done...written as a suicide letter by a man driven mad by simply seeing the creature from the deep...awesome. The story leaves the rest of the horror up to the readers imagination invoking questions of what does lie in wait in the dark waters of the world? Questions that when you are actually in the dark waters of the world can truly cause moments of fear induced
insanity (all be it temporary).

For me my favorite Lovecraft story right now might have to be "The Music Of Erich Zann." It really appealed to me because I am a musician, and the idea of music that means something more than notes on a page, a recurring theme amongst other Mythos authors post-Lovecraft, really struck a chord (pun intended). Just the image of the mad violist playing frantically, rendered senseless by the power of a sound, really stuck with me after many years.
And for scene, when the narrator peers out the window. Lovecraft was a creepy creepy man.

Favourite Lovecraft Story is a toss up, but I'd have to say "Shadow over Innsmouth".
Why? I liked the way the story unfolded, as The Narrator slowly begins to find out what is going on in the town, scarcely believing what he is uncovering. Most memorable scene is the end, where he finds out about his past and instead of being horrified as he was while in the town, he comes to embrace what he is becoming.

All right I am back again this time after some looking I realized that I have read some lovecraft (my bad).
The shadow over innsmouth
They portrayed this in the movie Dagon
Which had those elements of the story but also included the elements of film noir.
The reaon I mention film noir is the theme that often occurs why me? for no reason it just is.
Have room for a Paladin/Bard?

I'll add my dot then. I'm not a huge Lovecraft fan although I've read a good deal. Most memorable to me was The case of Charles Dexter Ward, partly because it was the first story I read. I like it because it's a well-crafted story, not as fragmentary as many of the shorter stories. The scene I remember most is when he finds the pits with the (un)dead creatures. I think it was the sheer horror of realizing what they were, which was a new concept to me at the time.
I also like the short story with the telephone line breaking up (the name eludes me). Very suggestive.
