[Acacia Games]Digital cartography show - NYC 7 / 16-7 / 29

Product Discussion

Hi all,
Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun here but just wanted to promo an upcoming event, as it seems that one of my fantasy maps (link) will be appearing in it.

It's an exhibition of digital cartography at the SoHo Gallery for Digital Art (link) to be held from July 16th through the 29th (free to the public). The maps are displayed in digital frames and will be available for purchase as prints on canvas or paper (apparently pretty high quality).

Still working out the details for the appearance of my map but, unless something goes horribly wrong, it should be there...along with a whole mess of even better cartography from *real* artists. I'm just a hack but some of these cats are world-class. Hope you kids living in the NY area can stop by and see the exhibit. Wish I could make it out.
M

NB: I put this in the "Compatible Products..." sub-forum because the map in question is for a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Compatible setting product I'm working on...and because I couldn't find another section other than "Off Topic" where it might fit. Mods, if you think this belongs in that section please feel free to move it.

First: LOVE the work! Very cool. Second: Where is your website where we can see more of your work?

First: Thank you so much!

Second: My *future* site is www.acaciagames.com BUT there's nothing there yet. I've got a localhost version coming together but decided to take the plunge and build something with a CMS (Joomla) instead of straight HTML in the hopes it would be easier to maintain in the future. Turns out I should have just made something pretty the way I'm already comfortable with rather than jumping into that pool!

But, I'll say that I'm working on an Asian-themed campaign setting. The city in the map, Haibianr, is the "point of entry" for characters from "Western" cultures to the continent of Dazhou. There are, as you'd expect, analogs of China, Japan, and others though there are considerable differences and some new (but complimentary) things as well. The first product I plan is an adventure called "Curse of the Emperor's Stone", which is about a MacGuffin artifact and involves lots of shady underworld types and kungfu-fightin'. Not sure if this stuff will be free, "share-ware", or paid - this is a sideline for me, more for fun than to make money.

And pictures. Lots of pictures!

BTW, LMPjr007, you got some nice stuff going there yourself. Great site.

Thanks! Well don't be surprised if you see some of your work at my site. (Hint, Hint! Email Me!)

I'll do that.

Bumping this, just the once, as this event is opening today. The final count is 40 artists and 70ish maps.

If anyone from these forums attends I hope they'll share how it was. The organizer promised to provide a report and pics so I'll link those here if he does.
M

Ah well, bumping again since there's some more news. The event organizer has posted a full listing (with thumbnails) of all of the maps on display at Terra Incognita, along with an e-mail link if you're interested in purchasing any of these maps from the gallery as prints.

Here's the link to the listing of maps. My map is here.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to sell many prints...as much as I want to buy a print of my own map, there are about ten others I'd buy first! So much awesome stuff from some really great artists. Please check it out and see for yourself.

Edit: Almost forgot to post the pics from the gallery. The organizer has a bunch here. Don't know if he plans to post pics from the reception yesterday evening...I hear it went well.

The opening certainly did go well. Lots of people in and a great response to the cartography. It's great to see these maps in their full glory - you so rarely get to appreciate the detail in a book, or on a small computer screen. I have to say that it's been wonderful working with the artists.

As Mearrin69 said - there are prints on sale, but just for the run of the show. These are numbered limited editions, and once the show's over - that's it.

I'll be posting some pics of the reception later today.

I went on Wednesday night.

This exhibit is AWESOME!! HIGHLY recommended!

Hey, I'm glad you were able to make it DnL! Wish I had been able to get out for it.

In other news, my wife (serving as my publicist! LOL) managed to get me into the local paper (The Columbian) for this.

Very cool! Also wanted to say that the show has been extended. The gallery has cleared the decks and extended the run until September 1st. The gallery has a summer break this week, but will be open again on the 10th of August. This means that the preview and gallery of all the maps will also remain up until September 1st. Well done to everyone involved!

I will have to check this out if it has been extended. I didnt spot it in time for the original run date, but I will have to have a look now that i have a second chance.

Thanks, Jonathan, for posting that update...had meant to do it but it slipped my mind. Glad the show has been held over. Sounds like it's popular. Hope that's translating into business for them (and the artists!) so they want to do another CG show next year. I'm (ahem) working on some more maps they can display! ;)

BTW, congrats on your latest product. The maps look awesome!
M

Thanks! The last two map packs have recently appeared on the Paizo store too (Underground river cavern here and the Temple Mound here).

The show is going well. I've been ironing out the print costs as well, so the next time we should have a better idea of pricing. I'd certainly suggest working up the submission for next year's show (and there just might be another gallery opportunity in the works a little sooner than next summer...).

Sure. No pressure. :) If I can turn out another map that deserves to be there I'll be pleased as punch!
M

If anyone is planning on going to the show and fancies a linkup for a pint of your favourite beverage, let me know! I'm always down for a hang out and know some ... er ... funky (for lack of a better word) places to hang out.
