I'm not sure how they calculate net interest as opposed to gross interest, but this WSJ article may help.
Taking the National Debt Seriously
I tend to think they are understating the problem, but I'm a pessimist that way. We are well on our way to a situation where we are paying more in interest on the national debt than we pay for defense or social security, and we aren't even having a serious debate about balancing the budget. We have some extremely hard choices in front of us, and a lot of Americans don't even begin to grasp the issue.
