Male Human Paladin 2

Perception rolls:

1st 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
2nd 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
3rd 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
4th 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
5th 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Sense Motive 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Keiran carefully examines the safes without touching them, to see if he can figure something out to aid Derryn.

Okay, now TWO NATURAL TWENTIES? After a natural one? Strange luck.

Male Halfling Druid 2

Sense motive on the second chest 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

oh man, I feel Keiran's pain all of a sudden.

Though different now sounds my name, the spelling still remains the same. Once prior to the leap of night, now becomes the birth of white.

"Sounds like one word that can be pronounced two ways... dusk is prior to the leap of night, but there isn't anything white about it and no other way to pronounce it. Maybe it has something to do with snow and winter nights? A blizzard, perhaps?"

Cursing their lack of a bard, Tayllon reviews his knowledge of the natural world for any ideas...
Knowledge check 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

"Perhaps someone strong among us should attempt turning the head on the first chest. I wouldn't suggest the paladin, however, as devil heads and holy warriors don't tend to mix."

Kieran feels intense anger emanate from the second box.

At this point you all have discovered everything you can with the Perception skill.

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran frowns. "There is something very angry within the second safe. Best leave that one alone," he says. "I'm going to examine them for evil," Keiran says, focusing on each safe in turn.

(uses Detect Evil on each safe)

Male Halfling Druid 2

On a lark, Tayllon decides to try soothing the angry box with his animal skills...

Handle animal 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

"nice chest...goood chest...we're all friends here, now say 'ah'"

Keiran Sligoh wrote:

You detect no evil.

Tayllon wrote:

Handle animal 1d20+5

You detect no change. The box remains locked.

"This one looks like it's from the Lands of the Linnorn Kings," says Yargos, referring to the box of anger.

Hint: some have been enchanted. Some haven't. Question is, which is which?

Male Human Cleric 2

Aimo tries to see if his planar knowledge can shed any light on the case by looking for familiar sigils, figures or other signs.

1st1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
2nd1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
3rd1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
4th1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
5th1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Sorry for the gap in posting. Had a bit of travel to do.

Male Human Cleric 2

Gah! Didn't see 'Detect Magic' there in the 0th-level spells...

On a whim, Aimo also asks for divine assistance in seeing if there are any enchantments on the safes.

So, yeah, Aimo casts 'Detect Magic'

The devil’s head chest is non-magical.

There is an abjuration cast on the anger box.

There is an abjuration cast on the riddle box.

There is an illusion cast on the featureless box.

The holed box is non-magical.

Male Human Cleric 2

Ok, I'll mull on that for a bit. However, one thing:

Aimo relays his newfound info to his friends. He then turns to Yargos:

"What can you tell us of these kings? Were they renowned for their angry demeanour?"

Male Human Rogue 2

Derryn unrolls an oilskin cloth, revealing a number of oddly bent slivers of metal. He hums softly to himself for a few seconds before selecting two and taking them over to the first safe. With a deft touch, he gently pokes and prods at the demon's head on the front of the safe in an attempt to determine its manner of operation, and if possible, suss out the combination.

Disable Device (+2 for using masterwork tools): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Aimo Trajan wrote:

"They are the rulers of the northern barbarians, a savage, war-like people called the Ulfen. I've seen them fight in many a barroom brawl. An Ulfen in rage is a frightening sight indeed!"

Derryn Rayle wrote:

Disable Device (+2 for using masterwork tools): 1d20+10

Derryn slowly twists the metal head back and forth, switching directions whenever he hears a soft clicking sound within the lock. The lid then pops open, revealing a book and two scrolls inside. The title on the book reads "“The Inward Facing Circle".

Male Halfling Druid 2

Hmmm, Tayllon didn't notice the holes the first time around on the chest with the hidden compartment. He will first sniff them, then peer inside, then try sticking his tiny fingers in to feel for a latch...

Perception if needed (though you said it was done) I'm guessing it would be a dexterity check at this point if I'm going to trigger a trap...
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

The holes are too small for even Tayllon's little halfling fingers. In fact, the holes are just about the same size as a flute's ...

Male Human Fighter 2 (favored)

So you say this one radiates intense anger? asks Lucian to Keiran, refering to the angry box So....maybe it responds to anger? I know this whole thing is starting to get my blood boiling. Open! God Dammit!! before I smash you open!! Screams Lucian at the angry box, bringing his fist down on top of it.

Tayllon checks to see if the writing on the chest matches up to the holes and tries blowing into one of them while covering various holes in a way that hopefully matches the writing.

Ok, I'll take the hint, subtle or otherwise.

Male Human Rogue 2

Feeling emboldened by his success with the first safe, Derryn goes next to the featureless box and begins feeling and prodding at it to see if he can pierce the illusion on the box and discover an opening.

Please make an Intimidate check.

The anger box pops open. Inside is a set of stone miniatures of an Ulfen army.

Oh, great...

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran mulls over the riddle, pausing to congratulate Derryn and Lucien as they manage to open their chests.

"Yargos, does this riddle make any sense to you? What is the 'leap of night'?"

Lucian takes a step back as the chest pops open, then looks at his fist, then to the others and shrugs.

The chest remains closed.

Male Halfling Druid 2

Perform 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Bear groans and hides his ears under his paws.

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran sees Derryn touching the featureless box. "Anything I can help with?" he asks.

Keiran has a pretty good Will save

Male Human Rogue 2

Derryn shrugs in frustration and grumbles to Keiran, "Well Aimo said there was an illusion on this'n here, but it just feels like a box ta me. Feel free to check it out but it's gotta be a purty good illusion ta fool me."

Male Halfling Druid 2

Is it possible to take 20 on the flute box? If so, Tayllon will

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran notices Lucien's success. "Well done, Lucien." The paladin nods at Derryn's words, and says, "Well, I can but try."

He begins poking and prodding the featureless box to see if he can somehow pierce the illusion.

Tayllon wrote:

The determined halfling keeps playing the strange instrument until a hidden panel on the chest's side clicks open. Several scrolls tumble out. Written on the scrolls is sheet music.

"Most excellent," claps the Grandmaster when you present him the opened safes and the revealed treasures. "And now I shall keep my end of the bargain: Nessian's hideout is in a ruined siege tower just outside of Absalom. I will have someone lead you there. Also, I have just been told that a group of robed men with scythes have broken into the Metro-Cathedral. Would this have anything to do with your business tonight?"

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran nods. "They are not men, they are undead. The ones we found in the granary were exactly such - enrobed and with scythes. This will continue happening until Nessian is stopped." Keiran was sorely tempted to head for the cathedral, but it was more important to fight this evil at the source.

Male Human Fighter 2 (favored)

Yargos...What's in the Cathedral? Asks Lucian I'm sure there is a reason for the undead's break-in...It might be worth taking a look"

Male Halfling Druid 2

"Much as I'd like to agree with Keiran, I think Lucian has the right of it. If these creatures are about to poison the water supply or some such again I'd say we should take care of them. Nessian isn't going anywhere, it's his scheme that needs to be stopped."

"I think I know why they are there," says Yargos worriedly. "You see every Oathday morning the priests of Abadar perform a ritual song on the Metro-Cathedral’s giant pipe organ. The assassins are there to disrupt the song and so signal the undead army to rise and attack!"

Male Human Paladin 2

Keiran cursed himself - he should have known that. "Then let us to the Cathedral with all haste!" he says, suiting action to words.

The Grandmaster commands a servant to guide the party to the nearest sewer exit to the Cathedral. Once outside, you see the doors to the temple have been flung wide open. A massacre of the temple priests has just occurred. The supernatural murderers turn to you with their horrofic skeletal faces.

Bear
Bite 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

I don't have the move to reach them this round, I'm pretty sure

Lucian fearlessly charges in and destroys the first dark spirit with one devastating stroke!

Derryn enters, shoots and hits. But the bolt does not seem to faze the undead reaper much.

Two of the spirits glide over the pews towards the party.

Kieran runs to the left of the hall.

A spirit drift over to Lucian and slashes with its gleaming scythe.

Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 - MISS

Tayllon's bear bounds down the aisle, overtaking Derryn. Tayllon himself launches a stoneat the same undead Derryn shot at and hits. The monster remains upright.
