[LPJ Design] Pirates of the Bronze Sky - Cannon and Siege Weaponry rules

Product Discussion

Well I just got back the first draft of Cannons & Siege Weaponry from our writer and I wanted to know from the fans how powerful should a cannon be? Should it be able to target individual people? How much damages should they do? What happens when they explode? Let me know your general thoughts...

Cannon come in a variety of sizes, from barely bigger than a long gun, all the way up to "blows holes in mountains". The damage of any particular cannon is going to be dependent on the size/type of shot, amount of powder and length of barrel.

Yes, you can target individuals, but at ship combat distances your chances of hitting that individual are nil. Remember that (at sea at least) both ships are in constant motion.

Solid cannonballs do not explode, they deliver kinetic energy which cause other things (ships, guns, people) to explode when hit. Balls filled with explosives (shells) explode on impact or after a fuze ignites them.

Grand Lodge

A serious combat vessel's broadside (in this context, say a privateer or frigate) should kill most monsters (Huge creatures might be able to crawl or swim away bleeding, while Gargantuan to Colossal creatures might soak up at least a couple of hits with damage reduction), seriously damage another vessel in several ship-combat rounds, so that the scene doesn't drag on, or take at least all day (maybe weeks or months) to reduce a well-built land fortification, so that players in command of a ship can't casually wipe out campaign locations. This also depends on your ship and structure hit-point rules.

A cannon large enough to require a crew should only be able to target, except by accident or in a volley, something that stands still for a full round while the gun-captain tries to bore-sight it, and then at a serious penalty. edit: If, say, a cannon generally hits a Large-ish creature on a roll of 20 unless the gun-captain's level is seriously over the target's CR, a ship with 40 guns (20 per side) firing a broadside at a creature's general vicinity has a good chance of at least one hit. It can and should do lesser, but still lethal damage over an area of effect, though. A swivel-gun at close range could target creatures easily enough.

A misfiring cannon should be most dangerous to its gun crew, then to anyone else on the gundeck as it tumbles about. Cannons don't explode easily, but powder magazines certainly should, doing a suitable amount of damage to cripple or destroy the ship and anyone still on it.

Jesus Christ NO!!!! This guy has been attacking saying I stole his art, even though we had a contract where I was to pay him directly from selling his sales of art from RPGNow. I have don this many times with artist and writers I work with. All he had to do was sign up with RPGnow and I would send his payments directly too him. But he never did. I asked him to SEVERAL times. Told him how to do it SEVERAL times but he never did. Why? I don't know? The reason I went with RPGNow is that he would get paid automatically and when he sold a product. Here would never have to wait for his money. But he kept telling me that he never got paid for his artwork. I kept asking him, did you sign up with RPGNow so I could send you the money and he kept telling me "No."

I don't understand why he never did. He has done several images for me in the past including the image the main Vampire Lich villain is his art drawing which I paid him in cash. When this all came up as a act of good faith I removed the artwork from RPGNow which he allowed me to sell and even my blog where I used to talk about him AND promote his work. But he continued saying all kind of this stuff on his blog which were not true after I removed the artwork. After that I just said forget it and I have not dealt with him since. I have been in this business a LONG time and worked with a LOT and I have never had something like this ever happen before. I don't know exactly what this guy's issue was, personally I think it was that he wanted to be paid more for his artwork and I did think he was worth it. But I acted and handled this completely above board about this. It is not GOOD business to steal art.
