Exotic proficiencies Traits not Feats?

Homebrew and House Rules

I've always been a little bothered by exotic proficiencies. Compared to the ease characters pick up weapon proficiencies in class they seem very slow to acquire.

What do people think of making them traits and either offering a story based trait with them (2 traits = 1 feat) or even allowing them to be learned in pairs?

I typically just let full BAB characters grab an exotic weapon proficiency as a free feat if they want, as long as they choose something flavorful and applicable to their character, and not ultra dumb. If the fighter from NotEgypt wants to use a Kopesh, he's free to do so without paying a feat tax.

Some people have posited the notion of trading in proficiencies for exotics. Now obviously trading proficiency in dagger for bastard sword is unbalanced, but a dwarf trading their racial weapon proficiencies might be a bit more like it.

I've never really run into a problem where a player really wanted to use an exotic weapon that much that they weren't willing to just spend the feat.

A lot of them roll over into marital weapons either due to use or race features too so that might be why. (IE the dwarf fighter already can use a Dwarven Waraxe.)
