Ideas for Tengu Aging

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Background: I am enchanted by the Tengu race and have created a paladin Tengu as a PC for an upcoming Kingmaker campaign. While working my way across the top of the page, I ran into an issue: Age.

Question: What do you think is an appropriate Tengu age? I am currently going along the lines of the elves, simply because Tengu were japanese outsiders, and these would be diluted forms. So, while they aren't immortal by any means, they still live a long time. Maybe in Tian, they even perpetuate the idea that they are still outsiders, due to their age. I don't know. I'd just like your take!

That definitely works, but if I recall correctly back in 3.5, Kenku aged pretty quickly. I want to say they were adults by age 9? I know Tengu and Kenku aren't the same thing, but they are similar, so I thought it worth pointing out.

I haven't heard anything official yet, so unless I've missed something, I say go with your preference for now.

That's certainly a different take. What book was that in, if you can remember?

There was an Ecology of the Kenku article in Dragon Magazine, I couldn't tell you the issue off the top of my head but I'm sure a little digging could find it. Pretty good article too, definitely worth checking out.

Edit: Quick Google search says #329

Sovereign Court

I know it's publisher is not the most popular company out there, the game systems are wholly incompatible, and the flavor may differ greatly from presented in the Bestiary, but a version of Tengu was vividly flushed out in Rifts (in the Japan sourcebook, if I remember correctly). Y.M.M.V. on the info's usability, but I remember there being loads of fluff there, and fluff certainly ports better then crunch.

I think the first thing you ought'a do is determine if you're going to make Tengu a different Race.

The Kenku in 3E was one of the most popular monster races. They were often used as cool urban monsters with class levels and lots of folks played them as PCs when DMs allowed 'em.
Plus, with all the great racial history design with Pazuzu, the Kenku got really developed in the last 10 years.

Sure, Kenku (from my 1E memories) were almost never used waaay back in the day. But they were still there. (I always felt the original illustration (Fiend Folio) was so sucky I certainly didn't want it in my games.)

All that means is that lots of gamers see Kenku when they see it in the Pathfinder Bestiary. I won't even use the word "Tengu." Just like I won't use the word "Vhaz'zt" for Graz'zt. Neither would Paizo if they could get away with it.

So, if you've got a great idea for Tengu and for your PC in Kingmaker, you might want to divorce that from all the Kenku. Make your own awesomeness.

I remember liking Kenku from the old days. Sure, the Fiend Folio picture of an anthropomorphic Robin isn't great, but somewhere down the line better artwork evolved. I placed them in my world but only in a small region that, unfortunately, PCs rarely ended up visiting.

I actually didn't care for the 3.x Kenku either conceptually or in artwork, and found them to be over-used. Frankly, I'm now tired of Kenku.

As for Tengu ... well ... as a student of Japanese folk-lore I'm something of a purist in that regard.

FWIW,

Rez
