If you guys do have problem marking up everything in it, maybe using a coordinates system will help out. Saves space, and it's not so much more work for the players either, since it's usually easier to locate something on a very large map by crossing two numbers and looking around that point than randomly searching for a tiny dot of which you only have a general idea of the location.

I just got a copy of the gazetter, would have loved a regular map grid system for the book to reference the map, spent a lot of time looking for city names.
