If you are struck by a critical hit while wielding a vengeful weapon, your next attack that hits the creature who attacked you automatically threatens a critical hit.

This seem about right to you all? Cool? Is there a similar ability already in print that I'm not aware of?

Dark Archive

That's a very interesting weapon ability. Certainly circumstantial enough to warrant a +1 modifier. I might give this a try.

Edit: I'm not aware of any similar abilities.

The last vengeful property I heard about was an increase to the enhancement bonus by +1 for every time you got hit by a target until you switched. This one seems very cool as well. I had another idea for a vengeful property:

Vengeful (+1): This property only functions after the wielder has taken damage from an attack. If, on their next turn, the wielder declares he will gain vengeance as a swift action, he gains a +10 ft bonus to movement speed, +2 to AC and saves against the target's attacks, and a +2 to hit and damage rolls against the target. All of these bonuses disappear after the target is dead, or after 1 hour. If he is hit again by the target during this time, the wielder gains an additional +1 bonus to damage rolls for each time he is injured, to a maximum total of +5 to damage rolls. This property functions 1/day.

The flexibility of this property also allows you to swear vengeance and then run away. That is pretty funny, but I'm OK with it.

This sounds like something I'd put on a x4 weapon lol

That's a very good point, actually.

Maybe the ability could extend the crit threat range for a round instead?

Idk, I kind of like it the way it is. It's the perfect weapon to use against people with 18-20x2 weapons, especially people that have improved critical or a keen 18-20x2 weapon. You carry around a Vengeful Scythe and they become all happy that they've critted you on a roll of 15 and then the next round you deal 8d4+str and a half damage :P

The only 'strange' thing about it is that the object seems to know when you got hit by a critical blow, which implies 'sensors' of some sort. IMO, this would work better as an intelligent item's ability.

'findel

It occurred to me it might be better as a feat for that reason 'findel. However, if dancing and defending are both non-intelligent weapon qualities, why not this?

As for Felgoroth's tactics: that's pretty much exactly what I was going for. In the case of a PC with a vengeful weapon, it allows them to do serous damage to a nasty threat to the party. In the case of an NPC with a vengeful weapon, it's a little bit of consequence for the character who has put everything into crits (and a nice reward for him if he survives the battle and has critical focus!)

I wouldn't extend the crit threat range, since that can't stack with keen or improved critical, and that's less awesome than keen.

Since it's a different ability altogether, it could stack with keen and imp. critical, why not?

I was referring to Madcap Storm King's suggestion that it extend the crit threat range instead of threatening a crit. That would make it the same ability, no? The clause under keen edge and improved critical seem to have been written as deliberately inclusive. I wouldn't want to invent a new power just to get around that clause.

Now, the power as written in the OP (which I'm still sticking with until I hear a reason not to) should stack with keen or improved critical. In fact, it's perfect for a high-HP barbarian or fighter who has critical focus and other crit feats. That's why I conceived of it; we've reached mid-high level and the barbarian in my party needs a little incentive to be reckless.

Now that I think of it, this might make a nice rage power as well.

Actually the clause for keen edge is as follows:

Quote:
Multiple effects that increase a weapon's threat range (such as the keen special weapon property and the Improved Critical feat) don't stack. You can't cast this spell on a natural weapon, such as a claw.

Therefore we simply do the following:

"...Upon being crit, your first attack next round that hits the opponent is treated as though you had rolled 5 higher on the die for the purposes of threatening a critical hit. If this attack does not threaten, apply it to the next attack in the round, etc. until at least one attack crits or you have spent all your attacks."

This "stacks" with keen (actually it doesn't care about keen that much) because it augments the die roll and not the actual threat range of the weapon. This makes x4 weapons still very good (crit on 14-20) but doesn't leave keened rapiers out in the cold either (crit on 10-20).

And yes this would make a badass rage power. Bonus equal to half barbarian level?
