You know, it's funny. I first truly discovered Greyhawk with the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, according to which the name Iuz is pronounced "EYE-ooze," and I've pronounced it that way ever since. I later ordered an old copy of Dragon magazine #93, specifically because it had a pronunciation guide. More specifically, I wanted the pronunciation for Greyhawk names. I was shocked to see that, according to the article, it's pronounced "yooz" or "EE-uhz."

Bear in mind, that's probably the same writing team that told you to pronounce bullette as "boo LAY."

What, you mean the writing team of Dragon magazine in the mid 80s? That article gives FOUR pronunciations: boo-LET, byoo-LET; and also boo-LAY or byoo-LAY.

From playing in Living Greyhawk for the last 6-ish years of it's official existence, that's about what I used. I have a Dragon magazine that has a pronunciation guide but I forget the number and am not at home to look it up. Love Greyhawk!

Also, because of a Mr. R. Vaugn we pronounce Saint Cuthbert with a French accent. Saint Cuthbért, similar to how you'd pronounce Steven Colbert from the Colbert Report.

I'm with Hogarth about Drawmij and Ulek, and I'm with Morgen about Furyondy and Keoland. I'm with them both about Bissel, Vesve, Keoland, and Urnst. The rest never came up for me.

This one I'm confused by; why would the accent be on the second syllable? To me, that would sound like Maurice Chevalier talking.

"Hey, I've heard the new Dungeons & Dragons movie is going to have Bigby (big-BEE) played by either Bill Bixby (bix-BEE) or Bill Cosby (coz-BEE)!"

Doesn't it sound like the ac-CENT is on the wrong syl-LA-ble?

Yes.

Grand Lodge

Sorry about Hardby.

I used bold on the second syllabel to emphasize the pronunciation difference and not the accent. Normally I'd say I made a mistake but like the OP says, I'm always right.

Hardby came up recently in game. I started playing as a PC in a new group and the DM pronounced Hardby with a strong "I." In thirty years I've never heard it that way. But, you know, he's been playing for thirty years, too, so...

Heh. Funnily, most of the names don´t put any questions how to pronounce them to me, as most have a german ring to them

Dramidj? DRAmidi

And Ulek? OOlek

And Bissel? BISsel

And Drachensgrab? DRACHensgrab - I know that most english speakers have trouble with the "CH" sound, which sounds a little like an attempt to clear your throat.

And Hardby? HARDbe - this -by suffix is common in northern German or Danish villages, actually.

And Yatil? YAtill

And Furyondy? FUR-yon-dee

And Vesve? VESve

And Keoland? KEE O land

And Urnst? OOrnst
