Inquisitor Help

Homebrew and House Rules

Ok so after failing at making a Bard for a new campaign I've decided I'm going to give the Inquisitor a try. Now I know the idea I'm using isn't exactly optimal for the Inquisitor and would work better as a Fighter or Rogue but I'd like to try it as the Inquisitor so ya... Anyway the idea is to be a Lancer type character so my "weapon of choice" is going to be a Long Spear (and I'll probably wear some spiked gauntlets just in case I can't 5ft step away and someone gets adjacent to me) and I'm not sure if I'm going to wear light or medium armor, I'll probably start in light and then if I get hit too much change to medium. So here's my ruff draft of the build:

Half-Elf Inquisitor
Str: 15 (+1 at 4th)
Dex: 16 (14+2) (+1 at 16th and 20th)
Con: 12
Int: 14
Wis: 14 (+1 at 8th and 12th)
Cha: 7

Now I may change str and dex around but either way the 1 that starts at 15 is getting the +1 at 4th level. I'm not sure what level the game will end but I think they plan on it going to at least 14th or so.

Domain: Travel
1: Dodge
H: Skill Focus (Acrobatics)
3: Combat Expertise
5: Mobility
7: Spring Attack
9: Vital Strike
11: Whirlwind Attack
From here I'm not really sure what to take.

Spells
0 - Detect Magic, Disrupt Undead, Light, Read Magic
1 - Cure Light Wounds and whatever else.

Grab Divine Power and Shield of Faith. Bonuses for those stack with judgments you know.

I took Quickened Spell with my 15th level inquisitor. That lets me slap on a free Divine Power (Or Shield of Fatih since I couldn't buy a +5 deflection ring) as a swift action each round. It's a bit expensive, but +3 to hit and damage is really very nice, even at level 15, and especially if you are just using that turn to buff.

Hey, what a coincidence, I just decided to give the Inquisitor a go myself, and game up with a kinda similar idea, if not build. I would give Expeditious Retreat serious consideration for a 1st level spell. No one expects a guy in armor with a melee weapon to be moving at 50'-60' a round, plus doing spring attacks with a reach weapon.

O ya, I forgot about Expeditious Retreat. With my already 40ft base speed (because of the Travel Domain) I'd be moving 70ft a round lol or 60ft a round if I'm in medium armor. On a side note does anyone know if Vital Strike works when you Whirlwind Attack? I'm assuming no but I just thought I'd ask.

Looks pretty similar to a inquisitor i was looking at making, ecxept i would drop vital strike for lunge.

That's an interesting thought... Whirlwind Attacking a 20ft radius... I think I'm going to stick with Vital Strike at 9th (because I'll be dealing a little more damage while Spring Attacking) but I might pick up Lunge at 13th for some crazy Whirlwind Attacks plus if I take a -2 with Combat Expertise I can cancel out the penalty to AC from Lunge.

Vital Strike can't be done with whirlwind attack. Power Attack, however, can add quite a bit to damage. If you're worried about hitting consider the following: At mid-high level you can throw Divine Favor/Power on yourself granting a +3 or higher bonus to hit and damage, then add in judgments, then add in other buffs. Your actual to hit is going to be around 6 higher than normal.

If you want to play defensive AC boosters are your friend, though you need no rings of deflection if you use a quickened Shield of Faith.

The one race I've found meshes really well with the Inquisitor is the Tengu. Proficiency with all swords and a bonus to Dex and Wis, two important stats for the Inquisitor.

Ya I figured Vital Strike didn't work with Whirlwind Attack (unfortunately for me lol). I'm not too worried about hitting as I think I'll be at least alright doing it with the 16 str and if not like you said I can always use a judgment. My main goal is to kind of move through combat and help out people with my flanking teamwork feats (although I may steal some glory from the Paladin :P). I may actually play a Human for the purpose of getting Quicken Spell at 1st level because now that you've mentioned it that would help out a lot. Also, I had looked at the Tengu because like you said it's a really good class for the idea I'm going for (I'd probably use a sword rather than a spear though) but my DM is only using core races.

Quicken spell is useless for you untill 13th level, when you have 5th level spell slots.
