I have a summoner, and am looking at the creatures that I can use for summon monster.

MY QUESTION: Should I always use the bestiary if the creatures are available in it?? I know my GM had to reference back to the monster manual once or twice for other creatures...

Lantern Lodge

JustinK is mainly referring to Summon Monster II in the Core Rulebook (Table 10-1 pg. 351). One of the monster's allowed is the Ant, Drone. However, when searching through the bestiary we could only find Giant ants listed along with their atemplate Drone. By applying Drone, you increase the CR to 3. This is a much more powerful creature than any of the others which are CR 1. Also, under Summon Monster III the Ant, Soldier is listed which there isn't an template in the bestiary for them at all.

Same thing goes for the Giant Lizard in Summon Monster 3. Did they mean Lizard, Monitor or Giant Lizard Frilled?

Has there been some sort of errata correcting this?

Yes, there has been errata.

This thread has the same question, essentially.

(James Jacobs 12/21/09) Official Errata for Summon Monster Spell. The majority of these errors, I suspect, came from miscommunication between what was and wasn't changing with these animals in the switchover between the 3.5 Monster Manual and the Pathfinder Bestiary.[Source]

Change Giant Lizard to Monitor Lizard. (The lists don't support summoning a Giant Frilled Lizard, but you could probably add them to summon monster V or summon nature's ally V.)
Change Riding Dog to Dog.
Change Ant, drone to Ant, worker.
Change Ant, soldier to Ant, giant.

So anything within the PFsrd is considered legal for PFS as long as it doesn't conflict with the guide for organized play?

Not really. The Guide to Organized Play is quite specific what is legal and what isn't legal. However, there are a few instances where Paizo has issued errata; the d20pfsrd site has collected some of those Delphic utterances and put them in one place for handy reference.

Ok thanks! Just wondering because the summoner on the PFsrd differs from the summoner in the final playtest so I want to make sure errata has been issued stating this difference.

I think the summoner on the d20pfsrd web site was not updated to the final playtest rules.

Haha, I figured something was amiss. Does anyone know a link to official errata? As we just found out it's not good enough to rely on PFsrd and an answer in the forum cannot be considered errata until it's officially published. So is there some page where you can easily access all the published errata?

As soon as Josh posts something in the forum, it's considered official for PF Society, as far as I know.

There's hardly a difference between a Paizo employee on the Paizo boards saying, "Here's the errata" and a PDF on the paizo.com website that says, "Here's the errata."

If you check the PRPG page, you'll see errata for various version numbers of the game as released so far.

I'll go check that out. But there is a difference because one involves a simple click and a PDF while the other involves searching through different forums. For players who are not active in the forums, it's important there be official errata. As such, if there is a mistake within the books then until it's official errata you can't expect people to follow the ruling.

If you want someplace that has every legal mechanic for PFS Org. Play, this site almost has everything. Things marked with a small P are society legal.

All it lacks are magic items/prestige classes/misc. and those are coming soon.

Maybe I'm blind, but when I go to the PFRPG page, I can only find one version of the errata and it's from 8/09. The changes above aren't in this errata, and I can't actually find them anywhere on the message boards, either, except as a cut and paste comment by non-paizo employees. Where are the several versions of errata that Joshua says exist?

Nope, not blind, I was just wrong. There is 1 errata PDF up that erratas the 1st printing to the 2nd printing. When we hit the 3rd printing, I imagine there will be an errata for the 2nd to the 3rd or something of that nature but that's not really my department so I'm not sure where that is in our plans.

As for your issue with the summon monster list, you'll have to go by James' post above for now.

Will do. Thanks.

When we release the third printing of the Core Rulebook, we'll provide two errata PDFs: one that covers the changes from 1st to 3rd printing, and one that covers the changes from 2nd to 3rd printing. Thus, regardless of which printing you have, there will be one consolidated errata PDF for you.

We'll also have an errata PDF for the Bestiary as soon as we release the 2nd printing of that book.

(And, of course, anybody who has purchased full PDFs of those books will be able to download a PDF of the full latest printing at no additional charge.)

(Both of these things will happen in the not-too-distant future, but we can't be more specific.)

I can't begin to say how much this impresses me. I'm SO happy you do this!

Did want to note, too, for the person who was asking--the errata is actually really easy to find. It's in your downloads section, at the top. It says something like "The errata for the PFRPG is a free download, click here". I just went looking for another one since I had seen Joshua say there were multiples. So Paizo really has already provided a one click solution in an easy place.

Thank y'all for answering the questions, as always. :)

Lantern Lodge

Thanks for info on when the next errata was out. As to it being easy to find, yes it was easy to find and I already had this errata. But it makes no reference to Giant Ant within summon monster II. I understand that the link kindly provided above by hogarth brings you to a forum stating the changes but in organized play I can't make that legal because it's not written. Players who have questions about mistakes in the rules would have to dig through forums to find answers. They'd also have to know to look in forums in the first place and who is considered and official answer.

Speaking of digging through forums, how did you find this answer hogarth?

If you're going to make responses within forums official errata, then can't you have an internet page that looks something like this:

Page 351 - Table 10-1: Summon Monster, under 2nd level change Ant, drone to Ant, worker ect.

Forum errata answers by Paizo employees can be considered legal for play for Pathfinder Society.

So sayeth I, so it has been written.

(Otherwise we wait for errata documents and the Society moves faster than that.)

And this is one of the things I (and most of my friends) actually love about the Society. Kudos!

Am I going to hell if I keep trying to convince people to buy Core Rulebooks while I myself am waiting to buy a second Core Rulebook (to keep my nice signed one from falling apart) until the 3rd printing comes out?
