Bribing the DM

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate can work on my DM. Just this past Saturday, while he was running a different game at another table, I called out to him.

"3 pieces of dark chocolate if you TPK them!"

More than one person at that table told me to not give him any ideas...

I know it did for one gamer; one of my best fiends that lives in Glendale bribed his GM with a bottle of rum and his GM at the tim (not me) let him roll up a Klingon fighter with a bat'leth weapon (that did more damage than anyother weapon in the game).

I've always had a policy of xp rewards for snacks and Mountain Dew brought before me. :D

I'm bribable. Beer is good for a couple free re-rolls, a bottle of good vodka might get that magic item the player covets, a hooker and some blow could result in a suit of armor of invulnerability, a helm of whoopass and the ability to play a pixie rogue, no LA...

I 'donated' some Mickey D's fries to a friend during a BattleTech tournament at a local con one time, where we had a random table to determine starting 'mechs.

Guess who started with an Atlas... Oh yeah, beyotches.

Yep, I've successfully bribed a DM before. He loved imported black licorice that we usually couldn't find in town. Tasted like crap to me, but he loved it. I had a package in my pack, and it allowed me to make a saving throw I would have failed.

These days, I'm the DM, and apparently no one sees fit to try to bribe me.

Hmm, I'd see a bribe as granting a bonus on a single Diplomacy check. Margaritas, on the otherhand, would actually lower the DC for any diplomacy checks against the DM for an indefinite period of time.

The real trick is to find a margarita glass that is big enough for them to wear it as a hat once it's empty. ;)

Cookies mean no one dies.

Booze means double treasure for the session.

My wife doesn't bribe me, she just gives me the "Oh... you mean you want to sleep on the couch, with the dog..." look.

I am open to bribery - I also punish players for hogging the food at their end of the table.

Liberty's Edge

I'm partial to wine and Thin Mint girl scout cookies.

Yes, they go together.

Things happen in my girls only game. I have it on good authority that several players have encouraged my wife to, ah, be "nicer" to me before the game in the hopes that I'll be lethargic and more apt to let them get away with murder. I've also had players insinuate that they would flash me if they got sizable bonuses on certain saves...but since they make the vast majority of their saves anyway, this never happens. *sniff*

While not "bribe-able" per say I am always a bit more generous when happy. When I am not happy I tend to use the players/characters to generate amusement...

*gently back pat*

There is always hope for the future.

Bribes. Well when I started my DM would take 'bribes'. Pizza, pop, snacks... that kind of thing. It never made a major difference but it could change the little things (or things he wanted to have happen anyways).

It was more of an influence the DM then out right bribery. That would have been insulting and lead to bad things (it was a room full of martial artists that value honour).

I guess I'm similar. Not that my players really ever try to bribe me. They know I can't be bribed but it doesn't mean that being nice and generous to myself or others is wasted.

One of my players always bring me cookies.
On last session, with a new group, almost everyone brought some stuff, like cookies, candies etc.
Now if my players would understand that they could become immortal by paying for my food and drinks, before and after game, everybody would be happy...

Personally, I've never gotten any enjoyment at all out of something handed to my in game for something that happens in the real world. I played with a DM who gave out free magic items on Christmas. I actually found it kind of depressing, like the game was somehow cheapened by the fact that I now had an item on my sheet that my character had no recollection of earning in any quest or buying with money earned in questing. He did the same thing for birthdays, but I refused such a gift on mine.

As a DM I don't recall ever having been offered an explicit bribe, and a few times when someone did something like give me a cookie or something, I'd jokingly tell them they could have "an extra experience point" which I didn't care if they wrote down or not. It was insignificant anyway. I know as a player, I've never attempted to influence the game with real-world material goods.

If your gaming experience really needs improving that much, it's more productive to talk to the DM about what you're not enjoying about the game.
