Dumpster diving! (Found D&D books!)

Off-Topic Discussions

So, I've been a dumpster diver for about three years, and yesterday we got into a waste room (swedish: grovsoprum, don't know how to better translate it) in a resident block. Among the several useful items we found, I saw a heap of books and magazines, and was thrilled when I saw a "d20 system" logo among them!

The books were nothing spectacular, Penumbra's "En Route", the Melniboné campaign setting, as well as a bunch of old dragon magazines, but the feeling of diving D&D material was awing! In some ways the best find ever, especially since it was the first grovsoprum for months (they tend to be hard to get into, unless you have the key).

So, the topic (except for me bragging about the awesome find) is do any of you people dumpster dive, occacionly or on a regular basis? What's your best, funniest, or most interesting finds?

I once went dumpster diving to retrieve my good shoes. My wife handed me a bag as I left our apartment. Assuming it was garbage, I threw it down the shoot rather automatically. When I got outside she phone and asked me what happened to the bag with my good shoes in it. ... ;O

I also go dumpster diving in university garbage cans when I see books on top. I've found some forty year old books on the teaching of English (American Kernel Lessons Series). Doesn't seem that special, but since it is in my field I was quite excited.

I did find a copy of D&D white box (5th edition) for $10 at a used bookstore (on Ebay it goes for $200). I also found some 2nd ed. AD&D books for $1 each at a church book sale.

And you managed to retrieve them before they got the bonfire going good? :P

It's a very liberal church. The United Church of Canada is quite inclusive.

Used bookstores and yard sales are the closest I've come to dumpster-diving.

I have found an original hardback copy of the Traveller RPG, and a hardback edition of Pratchett and Gaiman's Good Omens.

Being a part of the DIY anarcho-punk subculture, dumpster diving is rather common amongst my friends and I, and I've been doing it for years even before that. I haven't been diving as much in the last few years, but I still make sure to go to the colleges at the end of each semester and dive through what the spoiled rich kids throw away when they move out of the dorms. We call it "hippie christmas."

Anyway, I've found converse with absolutely no wear, working boom boxes and T.V.'s, a minifridge, and many other things. Best find I've ever seen though wasn't mine, it was my friend's. We had broken into a Staples dumpster, and she found a brand new laptop that had been thrown out because the new models had come in.

I've never found D&D books while diving though, lucky bastard!
