Role playing V Roll playing

I know almost all players max out whatever character you create because you want to be the best possible. When playing other Living campaigns in the passed, this had led to me play more with people that played stats, than their characters.

I am really excited about my concept, I tweaked the stats, yes, but I took a not so advantageous mix of proposed classes. Wel, one that could be "Better" designed, as it were.

I am hoping to develope roleplaying and working on this begining of a story I created and want to see it grow.

My question is, do you, as players mainly, find it difficult to inject roleplaying in Society games, given obstacles like time constraints, not knowing new party members, etc.?

I can say, from my perspective as a frequent GM, I see a great deal of roleplaying in my sessions, regardless of whether or not the group knows each other. The players are only 50% of the equation--it's up to the GM to provide an experience that includes a healthy balance of both RP and combat and still be able to do that within the time limit.

We recently had a PFS marathon at a con in Denmark, and I found that the main obstacle to roleplaying was the time limit. That made me, as a GM, stressed, and set a high pace. I tried to put in as many roleplaying possibilities as I could, but focus was definitely on the battles. With more routine we might get faster combat, and that migh leave more time for roleplaying.

Time is a major factor in roleplaying. A single session game isn't going to produce much roleplaying, but a 3 year campaign probably will. Once you've got an attachment to a character its pretty hard to *not* roleplay.

I for one do not min/max my characters. I have a clear picture of a character (not stats) that I want to play and build the stats around that concept. And I must admit that I have not regretted it despite my initial hesitation. I like playing whole well-rounded characters and when off on a faction mission that often comes in very handy.

I was with Entropi at the Danish PFS marathon and actually got a decent bit of RP out of it. I think the player's willingness to RP is the most important. If the players want to RP there will be RP even if the GM does not do anything in particular to promote it. However the GM has the power to increase RP or to quench it and is therefore also important in this regard, as Josh also said.

But mostly I think it is about the players. But I admit time constraints often cuts RP short as the story HAS to move on.
