Except in Arizona, Hawaii, and one part of Indiana (I think) in the US - they just ignore it. :-)

But not, apparently, coordinated with the UK, since it is the last Sunday in March for us. That's a bummer - puts me further out of synch with my nearest and dearest.

EDIT: No, wait - puts me an hour closer, actually. I think. Maybe...

Same idea, but in the US it was changed by a federal act - The Energy Policy Act of 2005. It was extended to start on the second Sunday of March - three or four weeks earlier than previously in the past.

It was intended as an attempt to deal with energy problems by reducing energy consumption. The whole act was also intended to provide incentives for different energy production methods.
