Improved Familiars

The Exchange

Were there any other lists for improved familiars other than the ones in core, Complete Warrior, and Complete Scoundrel? I was always woefully underwhelmed by the choices of Improved Familiars available to straight casters.

Also, on the subject of familiars, it says that "for effects related to the number of HD, use the master's character level or familiar's HD, whichever is higher". Would that apply to determining the DC of a Pseudodragon's poison, seeing as a poison's DC is based off of HD?

I agree, the list of improved familiars is kind of weak. For my money the best is the good ole psuedodragon. Blindsense, low-light and darkvision combined with telepathy makes him a great scout.

And no, things like the poison save don't go up. It's just for things like blasphemy and other effects targeted at the familiar, not for the familiar's own abilities.

Allow me to shill...

Always a fan of Improved Familars, and also a bit underwhelmed with the official selection, I did a small article in Kobold Quarterly #9 strictly about the subject. In the article I introduce 8 new options. (Arcane servant, blink dog pup, bookmouse, clockwork beetle, gliding possum, myna bird, skitterling, and symbiotic temporum.) Four with complete stats and the other four are quick modifications of existing statblocks with sexy new abilities. All of the new creatures are available to a caster between level 3 and level 6, so it brings the feat into play a bit earlier than normal.

Anyway, just wanted to point out the article. Hope you check it out and I hope it helps! :)
