I may be a little late now the cat is out of the bag...
But, according to AlernativeTo.net's page for Aperture there are several options depending on what you are looking to get out of it.
iPhoto you are familiar with.
There is Google's Picasa, and ACDSee Photo Manager, and Photo Editor.

My partner is something of amateur photographer as well, although he's been using mostly iPhoto as well. Aperture 3 had some serious issues, but they've just patched it (Aperture 3.1) which supposedly fixed a lot of the issues, but it just came out and I haven't heard any firsthand accounts of those improvements. The original release caused a lot of computer crashes, which is hard to do on a Mac.
Disenchanter, if she is running on a Mac (which it sounds like she is), some of those programs won't be compatible. I know, in particular, ACDSee is Windows-only.

Ohhh... You're right. I thought I had checked for that.
Not only did I forget about that, I forgot to mention BlueMarine, which is open source, multi platform.
