Gay marriages available on mount Everest . Nepal has gone ahead and legalized same sex marriage. The second asian country to do so.

"The ruling caps last year's defining verdict where the court had decided to recognise gay identity and granted them citizenship. There is now a separate column for the third sex in the citizenship certificate."
I probably just don't understand what this certificate looks like and says, but can someone explain what the 'third sex' is?

As long as they are treated equally under the law and allowed to marry whom they love then I'm all for it.
+1. While I'm not remotely interested in an arrangement like that for myself (the default disclaimer intended to assert my manliness lol) I despise any law which forbids someone from marrying the person they love. I couldn't care less if that person is the same gender or not. But then I'm apparently a bleeding heart liberal commie so what do I know?

But looking at in just the past Decade we have had gay marriage legalized in The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway Sweden, South Korea, Nepal, and guess what Portugal this week just went ahead and passed the same sex marriage bill through their house of commons. AS a PS I just learned Ireland has just introduced a same sex marriage bill into their house of commons it is expected to pass later this year. And here's a list of countries that allow same sex civil union with all the rights and priviledges of marriage The United Kingdom, Iceland, France, Switzerland, Germany, Lexembourg, Slovenia, Hungary, Finland, New Zealand again these all happened in the past decade. Countries that have passed partial marriage and civil union rights in the past decade but are expected to do full rights soon are the Czech. Republic, Isreal, Columbia, Peru, Australia, Austria, and Croatia. And all this has happened in just one decade. Remember all don't get discouraged we did this in just one decade imagine how much more we can accomplish in another 10 years.

So I guess progress is being made. I just wish we in the U.S. weren't so freaking conservative on this issue. It really bugs me. I like to think we are a forward thinking nation but more often than not we are following the rest of the world into modern thinking.
Check out the full list man I edited it.

Sometimes I'm ashamed of where I live but then I remember that every country has stupid laws and customs... its just a matter of which ones you can live with. Right now I'm hopeful that we'll keep moving forward. We are, after all, apparently about to get rid of the stupid "don't ask don't tell" rules for military service.

I can honestly say I have never been ashamed of being a citizen of this wonderful country. Yea as a gay guy I can say that I am not fully in love with everything thats been done to and for us but I can only do my best to bring about peaceful and positive change by just being me and not denying it.
Somethimes it's lead me to be denied houseing or jobs or have to hide something from my friends, don't ask/don't tell ya know, but we are makeing real changes.Think about how we used to be treated then see how much we have improved. I am still going to keep fighting for true marriage equality and the constitution is on OUR side. Remember it said "Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" it said nothing about some restrictions apply.

Remember what being gay is. I came out in High school, was kicked out of my house by my family, was spit on in the halls of my school, I was beaten 3 or 4 times. Threatened to be murdered in my sleep innumerable times. But guess what I'm going for my PHD soon married to a husband who is the most wonderful person in the world, and the love of my life. And I keep fighting. I've seen other gay friends beaten, commit suicide, fired from jobs, kicked from buildings, publicly persecuted, but so what. We will keep going, we will keep fighting that is who we are. That is what we do, don't let the bastards get you down don't let those bigot a***+*~s win. Look what we've accomplished so far, look at the list of countries above. We will breakthrough in the US we are a force of nature and nothing can stand in our way. Remember that.

Let me preface by saying I am gay myself. I am also against gay marriage, because if they make it legal I have to listen to my mom pester me about "when are you going to get married." Getting her to stop was the whole reason I came out to her. :)
YES!! Score one for gay GUYS. My mother never asked me about my choice in partners once I was out. She figured all gay guys were sluts that would sleep with anything that moved(I tried my best to live up to that)
and Tina if you think it was bad for you try this one.I was sitting at home on a sunday after haveing a nice night partying at the local meat market and my mother brings over 2 girls to "meet" me. Thats all well and fine but come to find out that they were both 16 at the time. I was 22. I asked my mom what she was thinking and as calmly as could be she said "well their 16 and arnt dateing so their mothers and I thought you could pick one and marry her. They can both cook, clean, and work hard and the dark headed one comes from a big family so she will be good at giving you sons"
I was floored. I have never felt more like a prize bull at auction than then. I moved outta state within a week. I mean I left everything,my job, family, sold my house to my brother for a buck and my truck to him and ran like the wind.
It's not just you ladies that are pressured to get married and breed.

Besides if you give up they win. And we all know we won't let that happen :) Besides we have Neil Patrick Harris on our side how can we fail.

I have never seen a successful marriage most end in divorce or worst and the ones that don't divorce are a mockery of what marriage is supposed to be.
As a bi-sexual I'm all for gay marriage but I don't see much use for it if it's just going to end like straight marriages.

Actually lol and I quote from a friend.
A study on marriage statistics of opposite-sex married couples by researcher Darren Spedale found that 15 years after Denmark had granted same-sex couples marriage-like partnership status, rates of opposite-sex marriage in those countries had gone up, and rates of opposite-sex divorce had gone down. He found the same results in each of Sweden and Norway a decade after they had passed their own such laws. He says this is evidence that same-sex unions do not have a negative effect on traditional marriages, which he says would also apply to same-sex marriages.
Funny enough gay marriage seemed to help straight marriage.

I think the argument that "it would damage the sanctity of marriage" is really codespeak for "we think its icky and don't want anyone else doing anything we think is icky".
Seriously Santorum is an idiot "Sanctity of Marriage" bullcrap. Read the research of one of the fathers of modern Psychology Carl Jung. Jung in his life did research with 18 african tribes, he later did a study of almost evry modern and ancient cultures what Jung found is that EVERY SINGLE CULTURE celebrated 3 things, birth, marriage, and death. Every culture had marriage, every........ single.......... culture......... had.......... marriage. And guess what many had gay marriage or a variant thereof. Including the egyptians, the babylonians, the greeks, the etruscans, the romans, certain polynesian tribes, a few southern african tribes, the spartans yeah you heard me the spartans, and certain native american tribes. Point is sanctity of marriage is a poor excuse for someone just trying to push their religious ideals that despite their denial aren't universally true.

Please understand that because not everyone is posting here does not mean we agree with you. Just your flame war is not worth the effort.
Don't care if they do agree frankly. If it did devolve into a flame war I would likely bow out. It is supposed to be motivational to those in my community that is all. There is a reason I do not visit nor post on the conservative belief thread. It is a motivational thread like this one in which I happen to disagree with so I don't get involved. It makes the conservative posters happy and I don't intend to be a wet blanket on their fire. Just like this thread makes people like me in my liberal gay community happy. That is all so stop being a wet blanket please and thank you. And I politely ask you to leave.

I'm against the whole "third gender" thing. I am still a woman even if I am a lesbian. My gender is as much a part of who I am as my sexuality is.
I have to agree with Tina. While I think it's important that people recognize there are different genders other than male and female, forcing people to check a separate box because of their sexual orientation is just another way to classify them as different.
That said, I think allowing couples of the same sex the right to marry is a step in the right direction, and I certainly hope they take further steps to recognize members of the LGBTQI community in the future.

LOL! You're not living under a rock. I volunteer for the Safe Space committee at the university I work for, and we often get people who are very active in the community that ask what it means. Xabulba's got it, though.

I've got several friends in the community as well as relations (well my wifes father) and I had just not heard of those before.
I work in the community, and I have to refer back to flash cards every now and again. Terms change on the regular, and you look somewhat foolish if you don't keep up. Then again, I have no problem looking like the idiot I sometimes am. :-)

I read a short article about this the other day. Well it was about how the Supreme Court didn't want to oppose the legislation and DC was then able to go ahead.
However, the article was a bit ambigious about whether something could still pop up to stop it or turn the legislation around.Anyone have more info on that?

The funny thing is, concern was raised about all the gay marriage and adoption rights being given. For example you have a whol generation in Canada in Europe who were to young to remember the civil rights battles are raised by gay and liberal parents who have no idea of any idea of opposition of gay rights. They believe this generation will widen a cultural gap between for example Canada and the US in the next decade.

I think he meant the DC law. I know the US Congress had the ability to stop the law from going into effect and did not exercise it. I don't know if they still have that ability now that it is in effect.
