New Laptop Troubles

Technology

Hey everyone,

I just got a refurbished laptop on Tuesday, with a DVD-RW drive. Problem is this is the first computer I've owned since the desktop I had years ago that just had 2 gigs of HD space. If I remember right CD-R's came out like a year after my mom had gotten that thing.

My problem is I can't get DVD's to play on it. I got a DVD player program, and I downloaded the codec or whatever that it pointed me to when I first put a disc in, but it STILL says that I don't have some key or codec.

Can anyone tell me how to get this thing working?

We would need some more information to help.

First, what operating system is it? I'd guess some windows version, probably XP, but if it is a version of Linux it won't be able to play DVDs. (Sony owns the rights to the DVD encryption, and to be able to use it they need to get money.)

Also, anything else you might add could help a lot too. Brand/model of laptop, and dvd drive would help.

You know, this would be the perfect thread for the new Tech Section of the messageboards...

Also, what codecs have you downloaded? More info, please.

Yeah, Windows XP (straight XP, not Professional or anything). It's an HP nc6220.

As for the DVD drive, I know nothing other then the fact that it's a DVD-RW/CD-RW.

Something about an AC3 Filter.

WARNING: Most of what I am about to link you to is untested by me. I can not verify anything.

I did not find anything with a quick google search about your laptop and DVD playback problems. So, I doubt it is anything specific to the laptop.

I did find this which reminds me of the "Sony needs to get their money" problem with DVDs.

A fresh install of Windows (XP and prior certainly, maybe even Vista+) does not include DVD decryption. Microsoft counts on the DVD manufacturer to include the necessary programs with their drivers. So, if the refurbisher did a fresh install, without any DVD drivers, that would cause a problem similar to yours.

So... I would suggest heading to HP Support and downloading and installing any of those drivers that seem to fit for you.

Finally, AC3Filter can be found here.

AC3 is an audio codec. Your laptop should have come with WinDVD. If you didn't get a disc for it, then it's likely preloaded, but maybe not installed. Conduct a search in Windows.

If you can't find it right away, just go to the Corel website and download it again. If you navigate to their page with the laptop, it should detect exactly what your computer needs and offer the appropriate package.

Another route is here at MS Support.

EDIT: Disenchanter beat me to the punch!

Not at all, you went another route. Sort of a one-two combo... ;-)

Well, I figured that it wasn't the driver, as it will read and play CDs and CD-ROMs fine, but I downloaded the driver on that site and installed it. I also downloaded the program that is for WMP, which meant I also had to update my WMP to 11, and tried it again (as I already have the AC3 Filter, and I double checked that just to be sure). Didn't work.

I'm downloading Corel's WinDVD right now to try that.

Well, it DIDN'T detect what I needed or offer me any package at all, and no, I didn't already have WinDVD.

But I found a roundabout way to get to the download page for WinDVD 2010 (the actual WinDVD 2010 page displayed blank for me), and it worked.

Now I just gotta figure out how to rip and burn DVD's on here.

See if you have a Nero disc or the program already loaded.

Not there, but I'm downloading it now.

Thanks for all your help guys. It was getting frustrating, cause I was doing everything the computer told me I needed to do and it still wasn't working. You guys rock! Let's hear it for Disenchanter and Andrew Turner everyone!
