Chopper's Isle Sidequest

Rise of the Runelords

Setup: Das Korvut had a wife and young child. Korvut loved to take his dogs out hunting and he used to bring his son along. Once when hunting his dogs chased a fox to a hole, but his son Griff begged him to capture it instead. They set a trap and Griff was very fond of it and kept it as a pet. Unfortunately Korvut's wife was one of the Chopper's first victims, his son was a witness to it, but the Chopper did not see the child as a victim, but as a student. The Chopper kidnapped the young boy and locked him away in a hidden room deep beneath his house on Chopper's Isle. The room was part of the Catacombs of Wrath, long separated from the rest by erosion. For a month Chopper forced the boy to bear witness to the atrocities he offered to the statue of the Demon Bird Statue (Pazuzu). When Chopper was finally killed no one saw the hidden door on to the room where poor Griff sat. He sat there until he starved.

Current Day: The Ghost of Griff (the Attic Whisperer) has been seen roaming the streets sobbing. When Das Korvut here's about the ghost he gets angry and attacks Belor for not finding his boy. Korvut gets locked up in the garrison and Father Zantus attempts to council him, but fears that the ghost will harm someone. He approaches the PC's to see if they can find the boy's body. The PC's might go directly to Chopper's Isle or they might ask around town.

Chopper's Isle: Other than a long tough climb, it probably takes a few hours to move the five year old burned debris that reveal a stone cover that leads into the lower chambers. Within they can find the statue of Pazuzu and a creepy sobbing. The attic whisperer is in one of the alcoves and its echoing. Near the back of the room they can uncover a stairwell and it leads to a spiral stairway down that eventually ends in a small pool of saltwater, after that the well is collapsed. Although along the stairwell there is a hidden passage that opens into a room where there are the bones of Griff and his fox.

Anybody got anything that I could add to this, its just a brainstorming idea. Its meant to be a short sidetrek that helps the players become good friends with Korvut and get to know some of the history of the town. Any thoughts?

I've borrowed this other idea from somewhere, if I could remember who I would give credit.

Additionally: There is a horror writer from Magnimar who has recently purchased a small home in Sandpoint, Fry (human female, LE expert 6) writer of the novel series A Black Tommorrow. She once murdered a servant to get insight into a novel she was writing. Either ways, sometime after the PC's start exploring the Catacombs of Wrath she pays them to accompany them through the Catacombs and for their first hand knowledge of Tsuto and his motivations for murder. The ghost of a little dead boy is too much for her to resist, she'd definitely want to at least pay the PC's to escort her safely up Chopper's Isle, maybe to excavate it.

The way this might play out is that Fry approaches Korvut after he starts having his mental breakdown after reportedly seeing his boy's ghost. Of course this makes Korvut fly into a rage and he gets thrown in jail. Fry or Zantus approaches the PC's with this information. The player's could also be witness to the outburst when Fry confronts Korvut. Any kind of research like this could benefit her upcoming book.

Anyways, anyone have any ideas to add to this?

I remember part of this from one of the Pathfinder staff games, that might be where some of the ideas came from.

I used some of it for my chopper's Isle.

But in mine, the SPD is a beast of Pazuzu and lives in a somewhat hidden cave under Stoot's house (Stoot was drawn to the Isle because of his own predisposition toawrds oddity, evil, and birds, he found the old Pazuzu cult lair later on and worshipped freely thereafter, but was rarely bold enough to do anything.)

The SPD has been around for centuries. (It's been called other things before then) Mostly docile, though occasionally coming out on Pazuzu holy days to pick off stragglers and travellers (its smart enough not to hit the townsfolk very often)

Stoot occasionally used his wanderings in town to find other like minded individuals (one ended up as the attic whisperer) and find travelling cultists. The SPD would sometimes bring sacrifices back to the cave where Stoot could try and perform
(unsuccessful) rituals. This fuels his rage.

Of course, now with Stoot dead (and the SPD too, my players found the cae early on and fought the beast) some new cultists may come to town looking for the shrine of Pazuzu and might try to bring back the SPD...

Now that Stoot is gone

I love your idea... I think this is the perfect way to review the story with the attic whisperer in the Chopper house as original proposed (I think) from Moonbeam... I'll use it thank you.

Sovereign Court

Yes, there was an Attic Whisperer in the ruins of Stoot's house, in my story, I don't know if this was the seed of this idea? I like your ideas, James, they help flesh out Das Korvut. Also, the author character seems like an interesting one.
I don't really have ideas to build on top of this, but I think you've got something interesting there!
I also like gigglestick's link for the Sandpoint Devil... Good idea! Wish I had thought of something cool like that! ;)

Yeah, I remember your use of the Attic Whisperer from either one of your posts or your stories. I had been curious as to why they didn't use it in the cannon, maybe I glazed over it.

I like the link between Stoot and the Sandpoint Devil, but it may be too close to town. I added some extra tunnels under town just for fun so that the Goblins could appear almost anywhere.

One of my current player's works for Das Korvut in his spare time and Korvut gives him hell, so I'd love to have a reason for him to be so bitter.
