Wow, I never even heard about this. From the trailer, it looks like they eliminated the character of Basil, the painter. The black and white Picture of Dorian Grey is worth a watch, since it's pretty close to the original Oscar Wilde story and I believe it features a young Angela Lansbury. Not to mention the portrait itself by Ivan Albright, which is itself terrific even though you see it maybe twice.
Having gone to art school, The Picture of Dorian Grey was a frequent assignment.

Just finished it, and I find it stands quite well on its own. Some definite departures from Wilde, but I think the changes were very well done and helped the film maintain its pace. Really, a remarkable translation to film (of the idea, if not the unadulterated novel), and ably done for a contemporary audience.

This film was not released in the US due to the homoerotic scenes in it. The British production company thought that it would turn off most American viewers. Most Americans who have waited some time to see this film are outraged, and have saught alternative venues for seeing the film.
Basil is indeed present. He's the one with the yellow scarf in the trailers.
I've seen it. It captures the essence of Wilde's novel in a chilling way. Highly recommended.
