Remember, the "Thing In The Dark" is not fully aware of its own abilities. It teleported Vaarsuvius and O-Chul because its instinct to do good overpowered its reason, which seems to get in the way of its using its powers.

It is now trying to replicate that feat, but it is having trouble doing so conciously.
