What about CS4's InDesign?
I haven't used it before, but definitely would give it a try. As is I have to draw every last little box by hand, none of the straightening tools of Illustrator, and if I try to move more then 4 boxes at once, my machine lags (and I've got a tweaked out Gateway P-7805u FX).
Thanks for letting me know about this... I'll download the demo later and give it a go. If it works, then hopefully it'll expedite the process and I can get the forms and auto-calc out faster.
PS... the retypable form has 8 ability slots, 4 saves, 4 ac types, 46 skills and it should be sufficient to print out custom homebrew games as well as 3PP suppliments. :D
Wicked K Games
Okay... so my searchfu revealed that although InDesign cannot be used to make fillable forms, it can be made so that acrobat auto recognizes the form slots. I had a friend via chat point out I wasn't looking in the right places for the align options, so that's one big plus, and the distribute evenly works as well. The update will be available in a few hours v1.25.10. :D

Well, good news and bad news... the bad news is that the intellegent items / animated objects page will not be on the update. My playtesters ended up pointing out a few irreconcilable issues with the current design, so it will be split into half sheets; one with permanently animated objects, one with magic intellegent items, and there will be both on a full page for ready printing.
I know a couple of you really wanted this, but I'm absolutely sure it will be on the next update in a week. As always, requests/questions/comments, I'm all ears and hope to get to each of them as fast as possible... thanks!

Two weeks later and your product is still in the Top 10 at RPGNow.com! Parabens!
Ironically, the only languages I've heard of people using PFRPG -- Spanish, Portuguese, and German -- are all languages I speak. I'm also a Latiny type of guy, so if you ever need a free language consult on flavor text or translation, just hit me up :D
Buying this when paycheck hits -- it just looks so fantastic, and at 75 pages of well-trodden goodness, it's such a steal I can't say no.
Wicked K Games
Boxy310 - Thank you very much! I know it doesn't say it on the page, but it's current size is 88 pages, and I have 6 more to add on before next week. I appreciate the offer for translation, and perhaps when we get it all the way to autocalcing I'll have enough time to translate it into all three. I know Xum plays in Portuguese and Stebehil said he would play in German IIRC, so it's something I'dlike to do.
I just submitted the updated file, there should be an email going out. The retype sheet is mostly retypeable and if there is anything you want changed, put it here so I can do it before next week's update.
The file size is down to 4MB now, I've been getting better at crunching and hopefully this will make it so the size when all the forms are up are acceptable. The initial try with the forms pages that I had completed were about 1.5MB each, and if altogether when done that was 150MB, that'd be too big IIRC.
I'm hoping the preview will be updated as well this time.
Wicked K Games
Ok with things working out how they have. I will be buying this today and letter you know later if I see anything I can think of along the lines of suggestions for improvement.
That is greatly appreciated! I hope it meets the needs of your game, and if not, I'd be happy to tweak it further. Actually, rpgnow.now wouldn't load for me earlier, but I'm hoping when the download rush from the Haiti thing slows down, I can get on there.
For those of you that bought the product, do you get email updates from rpgnow.com?

Ok I just skimmed over all the sheets, that took awhile btw. Anyways while waiting on the typable sheet is my big thing. I did notice 2 things on the current sheets I thought I would mention.
1) Page 5 the second full sheet. There is no HP box on that sheet, that is the same with a few of the others too. I know some of them are set to be paired with other sheets but hp I feel is something that should really always be on the front page. I can't think of anything that has to be adjust more on a sheet than that actually during play.
I can go threw them and list all of the ones if you want.
2) This is a minor thing and more just so it is more open to custom rules for people. On cantrips aka 0 level spells. In the spots where it has 0, like for bonus spells I would feel it would be better if you left it a blank box like the rest. i have played in games where GM's gave out bonus 0 level spells at the same as the 1st level ones for high stats.
Just thought I would mention these two things. I didn't see anything else that I felt needed addressed. Though i will say you could have likely easily broke this into two sets. PC sheet and DM sheets, the PC side alone is worth the asking price and then you could have sold the DM sheets for a buck or two on the side. Might have netted you more sales for those just looking for DM sheets to help run things.

The new update JUST took. I downloaded the new version just now, but if your version says v1.15.10, then there's a new version (has the retype at the end)!

That'd be great actually, but I feel I should explain (and this has been a misknowmer since I started the concept) that the second sheets (leveling on the bookmark) are actually intended to be a companion to the summary sheet (comes right before it). I tried to explain it to Ryan at 3.5 Private Sanctuary, and even wrote the new chapter intros to help.
The ones without the HP are meant to be coupled with the ones that have only the totals and the buffs. The concept is that you use the second sheet (without HP) for leveling up and calculations, and the third sheet is a seperate sheet altogether (for single sheet users). I didn't put the HP on the second sheet because I thought players would use the class area for it.
I've been trying to find a solution that better explains which sheets are for what without out-and-out labels on the page themselves. When you get the updated copy (v1.25.10), let me know if you think there's a way to better illumiate this, as it's been an issue I'm having a hard time with (I know players aren't used to a primary and secondary front sheet).
2) This is a minor thing and more just so it is more open to custom rules for people. On cantrips aka 0 level spells. That's a great idea! You'll seee it in next weeks update for sure! I'll probably grey the box a little like the touch armor so people will know it's usually not there, but can still do it if they want to.
Just thought I would mention these two things. I didn't see anything else that I felt needed addressed. Though i will say you could have likely easily broke this into two sets. I appreciate the compliment, but I am a bit confused honestly. The entire document except for the retype sheet (and it kinda is too is for the player). I'm gonna guess (but please correct me if I'm wrong) do you mean the adventure log/journal? I can see where you'd be coming from if so.
I plan on releasing DM tools after the Gamemaster's Guide comes out, but the journal I actually came up with because I played in a game where it was only every three weeks to a month and I kinda forget lesser aspects of the story. *blushes* It'd make a good tool for the GM to track with, but I think the player putting their personal notes in helps them remember how they felt about things personally and lets them speculate a bit too.
Last, I wanna say I appreciate your feedback. More than anything else, I can't wait for you to see the retype sheet. It's not 100% retype, but all the important stuff is... :D

Hey Wicked, I was thinking about getting into the whole freelancing business and I was wondering if there was anything I could help with.
Should I send you an email to the address you mentioned earlier? Maybe pitch you some ideas that we can mull over?
Sure! Feel free to! I'd probably refer you to Louis Porter Jr Design though. I basically pitched my ideeas to him and this is where I ended up. He has steered me away from the rocks a few times and given pretty honest advice. More importantly, he's fair and down with working with us newbies (only started all this in Nov or Dec IIRC).
I guess what I'm saying is I'd be glad to email with you and discuss ideas. He's just going to be a lot more effecient in getting you up and running truthfully.

Well, since I've got a wicked case of newb fu as pertaining to the publishing biz, I'm sure I'd want to talk to LPJ to make sure I get going along in that route. I'd just like to make sure that my ideas aren't too... puerile? Talking it over and making sure that they sound right sounds like a wonderful idea -- especially since you could tell me whether you think I'd be up to snuff.
Wicked K Games
Just a quick question: is there a sheet listing all the previous level-ups (i.e. what feats were taken, at what point ability scores were selected, etc.) in summary format? Because I know that level drains can be a pain in the arse to recalculate everything =\
The summary sheet actually is mostly just totals and information you would need most often. The adding stuff like that would normally be on the leveling sheet (sheet right after the summary). For ecample, the CMD add-ups (10+BAB+STR+DEX+SIZE) is on the leveling sheet, and the total (current CMD +temp/short-term stuff) is on the summary.
As far as level drains, I think pathfinder is supposed to be engineered so there isn't the need for character rebuilds and they fixed it here.
I think I could make a tracker sheet for recording changes over levels in case the GM still did it the oldway though. I hope this helps! :) If you'd still like a sheet for logging levels or if your GM still does it the old way, let me know and I could put together a sheet for that. :D

Ok yeah I get what you did with the sheets. I guess cause it is something i would personally never use the level up sheets is why. To me they just looked like much more detailed sheets with no HP box.
Have you consider doing the more detailed one and then breaking it into two sheets a front and back sheet so to speak? Not a major thing just asking if you thought of doing it. Only thing is not sure there would be enough to fill a second sheet with.
No worries I am always in favor of leaving things blank open as a default for that reason. As most every game I have played in has at least a couple of house rules and that sometimes effects sheets.
Yes I meant the logs as I seen them more useful to DM's than players but yeah I can see how it is useful for players too. Though really only me and two others in my group actual bother to take notes when we play and I GM more often than not. Was just saying the character sheet only i think would sell well at that price and then you could have the side thing. But I get what you was going for with them now.
And yeah I had to redownload it, had it for like a hour before the new one went up.

Yeah, I can totally see where you're coming from. I actually thought about breaking the solitary sheet into a front and back sheet broken up by combat and non-combat (this is actually how my initiative cards work). After the issues I've had with summary/leveling sheets, I put it on a back burner until the legal booklet comes out (it's an add on coming after the forms are done).
If you can go into more detail, it sounds like a great idea worth pursuing. What do you think would belong on the first sheet or the second? If it could be done without te previous issues, I'd like to give it a shot.
The retype sheet is on page 86, any thoughts?

Well for the more details I was only saying the one you have with all the extra stuff the level sheet. I was just thinking if you made the text a little bigger you could put in the hp and other stuff but put it on a front and back. But I am not sure there is enough stuff to fill up two sheets that way. i was more just thinking out loud.
As for the typable sheet, I like it. I do have one request though about the skills. Anyways to replace the skill names with boxes that can be retyped in?
Just thinking in that case the sheet could be used for a d20 modern game or scifi game etc too then. Since skills are often the biggest change from different d20 games and having one sheet to use for any of them would be nice.
Wicked K Games
I just wanna make sure I follow you on all these points...
1- So would it look like the solitary sheet but have all the information of the pair, and spread over two pages then?
2- Are you wanting boxes around the text words? The words themselves are retypeable for the skills as well as all the math boxes for skills and ability scores (STR, DEX, etc). I had someone off the boards ask if I could package the retype sheet seperate. Would this be helpful in your opinion?
I'd really like to make a sheet for 3.5 as well, but I haven't broken down and done it yet. I appreciate your prompt response and feedback. I've been awake with my son most of today and last night, and he shows no sign of sleeping, so I'll be up, but I'm a little less able to follow right now...thanks. :D

1) well I was talking about what you called the leveling sheet. It has more information than the other. But it is kinda crammed in there and missing like HP. I was just thinking all that info is handy and it was a shame it couldn't be used as a sheet all by it's self. But there really isn't room for the big HP box on it. Like I said I was just thinking out loud.
2) DUH! Now I feel stupid. I didn't realize the words was retypible till you pointed it out. No thats fine as is. I just didn't notice they was, I didn't see a box around them so just assumed they wasn't retypeable.
As it stands now with a little work the retypeable sheet could be used for pretty much any d20 game.

Awwww.... don't feel bad! I sincerely wasn't sure I followed you on the boxes, in case that's what you wanted. On the retypable sheet in adobe reader up at the top right crner there is a button for turning on highlighted fields (not on the sheet itself, but in acrobat since a form is in the pdf). If it's on, it should turn all the refilable areas light blue. I hope this helps, and sorry my last save had it turned to off.
I'll have to tinker with the the front sheet idea a bit. I've very please it will work for you, and if any other words aren't retypeable you'd like to see done, let me know... :D

I'd just like to answer saying that no, I do not get updates from RPGnow saying that there has been an update. I have, however, added this thread to my RSS reader, so I can see when there is activity here.
I'll try to get the new suite of pages downloaded and looked at this week.
As for suggestions and ideas...
My wife is interested in a 'large type sheet' that is set up for use in-session that has the critical numbers she needs in easy sight. This is an extremely focused request, and as such, not something that you need worry about, but it would fit her needs, so maybe others to...
She would want on this sheet:
Name
Stats/Stat mods
Saves/Defenses
Skills (just the ones you've got ranks in)
CMB, CMD, and slots for 2 weapons
Initiative Bonus
HP
A list of 'trackers' that let you tick things off that are typeable...
so hers would be 'First level spells', 'second level spells', 'arrows', and 'bardic performance' and she could set up the number of slots and then tick them off.
All of this in the largest font possible to fill up the page. This would be used as the 'active' sheet for a session, easy to read, easy to see critical info, but not all-inclusive. It would be the primary sheet for combat, and you'd use the more detailed sheet whevenever you use an alternate weapon, weird ammo, untrained skills, etc.

Two thoughts I had when reading this... she could use the combat version intiative cards I release stretched onto a letter sized paper for a solution at the moment. It has all the stuff she was wanting except that the skills are universally used ones. I could easily modify the card to have blanks (in fact I probably will later). I might just add a set of the two cards more like this to help in this fashion. Send me an email Kakarasa at gmail dot com if you don't mind.
Another idea... I could modifier the familiar sheet to make it a cohort half sheet of sorts, then stretch it to a full landscape style page. Does this sound like it would work for you, and if so letter or legal sized paper?
I'm not sure why it doesn't send, as I could have sworn updates were supposed to send emails, but perhaps a version number on the sales page would help too? I use RSS a lot on here too. While my computer is processing moving fields in acrobat (takes two - five minutes), I pop on the boards and check my threads list.
As for the tick-off idea, I've been thinking of adding this for a while, but my initial local playtesting group said they'd rather use pieces of scratch paper. Knowing there is a want for this though, I'd definitely be up for adding this (a request is what got me doing the spells per day sheet.
The only question I'd have on this for you and the community is what "questions" would you like to see on the list? ("Question" being some obvious stuff like name, and unobvious stuff like uses vs used per day). I have a few ideas for this, but I would like to hear what you think... :D

Boxy310 - I was in the car a few minutes ago and an idea hit me... why not print out a new leveling sheet every time you level up and put the old one in storage, then if your DM makes you reverse a level ou have the notes right there with most everything! The hit die spot is going to be changed to say HP total for each class, so if you printed a new sheet, then later got knocked back permanently, just change the info on the summary sheet! :D

I just bought this and have been thumbing through it this morning, and wanted to give my initial impressions.
One of the main draws for me was the inclusion of a 'body graphic' for the various magic item slots a character has. I printed out one of the sheets to see how it looks, and I have to say that the size is awfully small for writing information into the blocks. It looks like there's too much being crammed into one sheet, and I know my players would be turned off by this and not want to use it.
If such options are possible, I would suggest blowing up the graphic needs and putting on its own page (like the 3.5 MIC sheet) so people could write in what they have and be able to quickly read it. The rest of the data on the sheet could then be blown up to a more practical size as well.
My humble 2cp, of course.... :)

Hmmm... The intent is to solve this with fillable forms, but I don't think it would hurt to try to make an enlarged set of sheets. Let me ask you one question though, did you have 'auto-shrink' or 'fit to print area' on (or something similar)? The sheet is intended to be printed at normal size unmodified as the borders are included. If this doesn't solve know I printed it out with the shrink setting once to see how it would be and it is itty-bitty. Physically it is the same size as many other sheets, but it is a bit cramped and I hope the the fillable formswill solve this.
Let me know what results you have. As many have learned, I am fully willing to work with the patrons of this project. I just wanna make sure we're on the same page... :D

So... I tried an experiment of printing both sheets out (my main page and the one from the core rule book). Although most places the box size is the same, the weapons and ammo slots are smaller as the CRB sheet is 1.5 times taller. If you can tell me what exactly you'd like to see different (besides a full sheet inventory slot graphic).
I'm going to include a full page inventory graphic in the next update. As far as the rest, do you feel all the pages lack space? Another suggestion I was given recently is to put the entire thing on legal size pages (14x8.5)... what do you think of this? It'd add 3 inches to the top and I could make everything taller.
Like I said before... I'm willing to work with ya! :D

I checked my print settings, and it was set to 'Fit to Paper'. I removed that and printed the page again (P. 23 specifically) and they look the same. If the fillable forms feature is going to handle this, then it should be fine. I just know that my party likes having a full-sized graphic for fast reference, so I have to speak up for them, right? :)
Thanks for the fast reply, and for putting so much effort into making this portfolio work for everyone!

You're very welcome! Send me an email to kakarasa at gmail dot com... I have the graphic full page done, and I'll shoot it over to you so your group can use it right away. Let me know if this is what you mean, okay? I respect you standing up for your gamer, and I would to the same for mine. I'm a strong advocate of 3PP working with the community. Sometimes this isn't possible, but the trade off for a little extra time is great IMHO. ;)

I decided today the eidolon sheet could use a minor facelift... I'm not sure when this would be done, but I was reading the SRD and it's changed enough since the start that it's time to change it... Any thoughts?
None personally but one of my players wants to play a Summoner so after making one and using the sheet he might have some thoughts i will ask him. But thats at least a week away before we make characters.

I decided to take in MDT's houserule, and when building my summoner (playing one saturday) I used the updated rules on d20SRD.com. Gonna leave the old one intact, but armor under the most current version is gone, and some stuff I felt didn't meet my expectations.
Are you building from level 1 or higher (if you don't mind me asking)?

New game so level 1, we are just waiting to start. Have a few people either buying houses, getting new jobs or what not over the past couple of months. So we are waiting to start till everything settles down again, so people can more easily attend with out missing.

Cool... I don't think the changes will effect the first level as much as subsequent levels. You may find this thread interesting BTW...

The Advanced Character Portfolio is #4 on the RPG Countdown! I spoke with Ed briefly and if you want to hear it, click on the link.
I other news, I had mentioned wanting to release an update today, but I felt when I looked over it today that there wasn't enough change to warrant an update yet, and I would like to beef up the content changes before throwing it out there. It will be soon though, there are a few new pages, and I am gonna put the retype sheet seperate so it can be copied and saved for each variant made (via zip with 2 docs)... thanks.

I definitely will. I may start a new thread on it's development, but I will link it up here. I'm having issues with the mail-merge, but I hope to overcome this soon.
I actually just got around to downloading the updated version of the character sheet since it got the re-writable form. Am I not supposed to be able to save it once I've modified it?
EDIT: Oh, and it's really cool to see my name on an "official" RPG release as a playtester.
I'll be fixing that and having the file seperate (customizable sheet).
Credit is due and it is given. I appreciated all the feedback and notes during the development and as things have rolled along. :D

My suggestion if you know how to use layers:
Cut back on the number of pages, and have the half-sheets all on different layers on two or three pages. That way you can customize the sheet more to your liking.
And maybe also use layers to switch between 3.5 and PFRPG compatible sheets (skills, CMB, and CMD are all I can think off off the top of my head, maybe a logo identifying the game as well).

Two things Id like to see on there that Im not seeing, and please tell me if I am missing the obvious, are
1) a section for calculating total melee and ranged attack bonus, similar to how the CMB is setup. That helps me out immensely as I am math challenged. Ideally, it would be located on the front page where the armor/shield/item boxes with enhance/hp/hardness options are located.
2) a section for armor similar to the weapon set up. Well to be fair, really what I want to see is a box for Max Dex bonus for armor, close by my AC calculation section.
These are the ONLY nitpicks I have with this otherwise AMAZING sheet. If I am being dense (its known to happen) and these are on there please point me in their direction. Thanks again, hope your child is doing better!
