Why do i bother trying to work?

Off-Topic Discussions

Seriously.

I spent the Christmas/new year period elbow deep in greasy water, blissfully happy because for the first time in a long time i had a steady and stable job, even if it was only for four weeks. I was looking forwards to having money that i had earned. I was high on the experience of self worth and genuinely grateful to my employers. I gave the job my all and worked my socks off for them.

And now it is starting to look like they have no intention of paying me for my labour...

WHY DO I F$$$ING BOTHER? I want to work, i want to be able to tell the job centre to take its dole money and stick it up its arse, but its like the world just wants me to rot on it.

If you're in the states contact the local labor board and file a suit immediately. Unless this is some place your family owns or the like, you should be able to at least report them.

I am in the UK and there is i am sure a route to deal with this. I'll speak to my mother about it later(she is a lawyer so she will be able to either point me in the right direction, or find someone at her firm who can), but it is possible that the money just hasn't arrived yet, depending on how they elect to pay me. But it is basically a day past when i was expecting to get payed.

a day isn't too bad. It could simply be a slow post or maybe the employeer dropped it in the boc late in the day. I realise it sucks having to wait but if after 3 days the check hasnt arrived THEN call the employeer and make a POLITE!! inquiry.
I worked a couple of jobs where I did the work and it took a week or more to get paid based on their pay schedule. If you ever hope to work for these folks again I suggest being civil and mannerly. Even if they are scum you will develop a good work reputation.

I understand that you are irate about this, but I would heed Stevens advice and stay calm and polite. Do you have any other hints that they are not going to pay? Or is it just a hunch because the money is not there yet? Do you have a chance to ask somebody else working for them how they go about paying on time? It could easily be a hiccup due to the holidays, and being irate to them today if the money comes tomorrow would be very awkward, and may diminish your chances at working for them ever again. If anything, calm down, call them, and ask politely when you should expect the money. Storming their office (or whatever) and yelling "where is my money?" won´t do any good.

Sorry if that sounds condescending, but I know if someone comes to me all up in arms I´m gonna judge him much more negatively than if he´s polite, even if obviously enraged about something - a little politeness really goes a long way.

Yeah, it's frustrating but sometimes (especially if you're working freelance) it takes a while for them to get to paying you. When I was invoicing at my present job, it would take as long as three weeks to get my paycheck.

I'd give it a few more days before you start considering legal action. Of course I would also hound them every day until you get your money, especialy if you have bills that need paying.

Don't worry, i'm not going to do anything stupid...I'm just angry and a little hurt. I don't like being made to feel like i would have been more sensible having stayed on Jobseekers allowance rather than working.

Contact your local MP, preferably by letter (and keep a copy for future reference). If your local MP is any good (and given that there is a general election coming up, then even the not so good ones may have incentive to get off their butts and make some helpful noises) then he/she/it should at least be interested in directing their support staff to find out what you should do next.

I think if you write to them at the house of commons and ask a question then they're honour bound to reply, or something like that.
Here in Sutton Coldfield my local MP has helped me sort out things on several occasions when Handsworth Benefits Office have lost, misread, or otherwise had difficulty with paperwork, and I hope it's given him some insight into what the unemployed have to deal with...
