Urumi, how exactly does it work?

Does the Urumi from the Pathfinder Campaign setting work like a Whip or is it more like a Polearm? I have a player who uses one that thinks it is more like a sword with reach. I contentd that it acts like whip in that it doesn't threaten at reach.

If you search youtube for "urumi," you will see exactly what it is. It's basically a giant coiled metal spring with a sharp edge that is demonstrably useful both adjacently and at range.

The 3.5 urumi works like a 3.5 spiked chain (except you can't trip with it).

I thought it was an ingredient in Soy Sauce

It's also the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

for the PFRPG one.... magic 8-ball says...... "try again later" it has been said that most of the items in the campaign setting will be updated to PFRPG in the adventurer's armory companion.

Damn you Magic 8 Ball.... Damn you to Hell!!!

AA isn't out till April but I need some advice right now. The text is a little confusing, but the table shows it's clearly a Reach and Disarm weapon. So I guess it's just a long flexible long sword, but not a whip at all.

Sample YouTube video

There is a bladed scarf in CoT that has reach... it's in the same book as the hellknight... since THAT is pathfinder made then it's likely that it kept its reach... which makes me think the Urumi would too.

You say urumi, I say umami / urumi, umami / MSG and a brahmin army / let's call the whole thing off.

I did the whole video search thing, but that doesn't really help with mechanics all that much... most of the videos are too grainy anyway.

Another youtube example

Well, from the grainy videos I would say that it has reach because you can certainly nail someone with it from more than a square away, and it also is useful adjacent to the user, since the thing's blade is likely quite sharp the entire length.

I do think it might be more vulnerable to Sunders however, but not 100% so.

Definitely an Exotic Weapon.

Great for an NPC, but I don't think I would train in it as a PC. I can just see too much going wrong. In game terms I'm not sure what mechanics could be used against me, but for fluff, I can see LOTS going wrong.

:)

Well the Bard player wondered if it was whip like enough for his proficiency in whip to cover it... thus far I have ruled it's not whip like enough.

yeah I agree it's not enough like a whip to use that proficiency. I definitely think it has to be an Exotic Weapon.
