Malfeshnekor is a no-show

Rise of the Runelords

In the game I'm running, a party of 6 PCs has taken on Thistletop with great success. They haven't left yet and it's not entirely clear what they're going to do next, but so far they've managed to (purely by chance) avoid encounters with the goblin druid, the bunyip, the tentamort, the giant crabs and Orik Vancaskerkin; and (with a combination of skill and luck) kill Ripnugget, Bruthazmus, Lyrie, Nualia, the yeth hounds, four goblin dogs and most of the goblins.

At the end of tonight's game they decided to hole up on Dungeon Level 2 overnight and recover. One PC died, and it's possible that the affected player will take on Orik as a player character with the next session; after all Orik is now unemployed, and he never had any quarrel with the group.

If they leave without encountering Malfeshnekor, what if anything is that likely to do to the timeline of the adventure, in terms of the plans for a second assault?

Malfeshnekor doesn't really effect anything. Nualia was the force uniting the goblins for a second assault on Sandpoint. With her gone, the problem is pretty much solved and dogface can go back to twiddling his thumbs waiting to be let out.

We're in the book Sins of the Saviors and our Sorc/Wiz/Rogue/Ultimate Magus just decided to bum one of my scrolls of teleport to go back there and look for some super vital information he could swear he saw. (He was also the only character in our party to have seen Thistletop, the rest of died and been replaced since then)

At level 12 Malfeshnekor almost killed him. Blink is a canny defense.

Let's split up. We'll cover more ground that way. ;-)

If you want the party to encounter Malfeshnikor, you could give him some sort of mental contact with one of them while they rest in Thistletop. He could seek aid gaining his freedom, offering a valuable reward for their aid. If you deceptively suggest that he'll soon free himself anyway, they may just go for it.

Our party did this with the tunnels under the glassworks. We didn't think anything actually lived there. We just assumed they were going to be used to stage another goblin attack, allowing the goblins to get in past the defenses and strike from inside. We sent our rogue and ranger to scout the tunnel and tell us whether it would be feasible to put defenses down there, or if we should just collapse it.

Boy, did that ever suck for them.

My PCs did the same thing. Two PCs went back to the tavern, the rogue checked out the tunnels. As soon as I showed my PCs the picture of the wrath monster that he encountered, everybody went "Hoo boy, there goes the rogue." Thankfully, he got some lucky crits in with his rapier and made it out alright :)
