I have a PC who wants to create a character whose concept is to be a sort of tinker. He wants the character to create and adventure in something like the apparatus of the crab. We will be using Pathfinder, but with pretty much anything 3.5 available. Does anyone know of anything like this?
At present, he is looking at being an artificer and then moving into a prestige class maybe. I think we might have to build a prestige class.

There's a prestige class exactly like this, called the Maester, from Complete Adventurer.
