My wife has hinted several times this week that a Wii would be an awesome Xmas present.
I'm an Xbox man, so I know nothing about the Wii, and I need to go make a purchase today--what should I buy and what should I avoid?
Thanks!
First things first: What games do you and your wife enjoy?
The basic Wii box will have everything you need, save a second controller. It comes with the sensor bar and all other necessities already IIRC.
Besides that, there are a few games I would strongly recommend for people who can get over worrying about looking silly. WarioWare in particular is a particularly weird rapid-fire mini-game marathon that supports a round-robin style multi-player experience.
If you're hunting for more serious fare, it's out there, particularly with the new Silent Hill release(a "remake" of sorts of the first game, so no worries about being unfamiliar with the series).
Really though, one needs to know what she's looking for to make genuinely helpful suggestions. Adventure? RPGs? Something with more action? Casual adventure? Survival horror? Puzzlegaming? Sport-sims? Heavily physically active games?
Personally I would recommend the Wii version of the Metroid Prime trilogy(FPS adventure based on exploration and collection of equipment), Zelda: Twilight Princess(solid adventure game), and Resident Evil 4 along with some GameCube classics like Eternal Darkness(I really recommend checking out Eternal Darkness no matter what your preferences may be) and the various downloadable games like World of Goo and the new Sam and Max and Monkey Island games(though those are available for other platforms which you likely have, namely PC). But of course, YMMV.

Thanks, Mikaze! Being able to check the Paizo site from my phone tonight was a boon. These are some great suggestions--I'm definitely interested in RE4 for myself, but I couldn't find it tonight.
In the end, I bought a Wii system which came with a Sport game (awesome one-day sale of $175 at Fred Meyer), and the one thing my wife was most interested in, Wii Fit Plus.
I went ahead and picked up Wario Land based on your suggestion, the New Super Mario Bros., and Republic Heroes (with a blaster). I grabbed an extra remote and wheel, and I'm going to look tomorrow for RE4 or Silent Hill. My wife also wants the training game (boxing, I think?).

Ha, good on you man! Hope you both enjoy it!
Funny enough, I just picked up a Wii AND a WiiFit for my brother and sister-in-law. I WISH I had found a sale like that one! Ow...

If there's an actual Wario Land game out for the Wii, it'll be something other than the WarioWare game. I honestly haven't been keeping up on that franchise though, so I have NO idea what's out there.
I'm not sure about the training game(it could be any number of games!), but there are a few boxers out now IIRC. Punch-Out got revived recently, even.
About RE4, personally I'd recommend the GC version, which will work just fine with the Wii but will require a GameCube controller AND a GC memory card, for the sole reason that the Wii version has a big targetting reticle at all times, rather than the simple, more realistic laser sight dot. This may not be as big a mood breaker for you of course, so take my complaint with a grain of salt!
still waiting for a vertical split-screen fencing sim

The game I picked up is called "Wario Land: Shake It!" It's from 2008 and I thought it was the same game you were talking about. At any rate, it sounds like a lot of fun with "running, jumping, and smashing."

Heh, I've no experience with the actual Wario Land series but I've heard they tend to be solid games. Should be good!
(is saddened that the only game he's made time for in the past two weeks is Team Fortress 2 followed by more Team Fortress 2)
edit: Quick note on Silent Hill:Shattered Memories - No combat. You just hide and avoid, if I understand correctly, a bit like Haunting Ground for the PS2, minus the dog.

Hey Andrew.
I have a Wii, and about 20 games for it. I do not, however, buy the typical console games for it. If it's got Mario/Wario in the title, it's not coming in this house!
If you bought the Wii console, it comes with 1 remote and 1 nunchuk (the controller pair). You will need AT LEAST one more pair. We have 4, the max supported. The Wii Fit Plus is a great buy. However, does it come with the Wii Fit Balance Board? We bought the original Wii Fit, which came with the balance board. I just bought the Wii Fit Plus for MY wife for Xmas...it was a stand-alone disc, but it requires the balance board.
Another good game is Wii Sports Resort. It, however, requires the Wii Plus remote plug-in. It comes with one, but you'll most certainly need another.
Other games she might enjoy: Dance Dance Revolution 2 or 3 (with a dance pad!). A good workout.
Boom Blox 1 and 2...very fun.
A hidden goodie, if you can find it: Monster Lab. Surprisingly, my wife loves it and plays it more than I do!

Yeah, I picked up another nunhuck controller today, and the Wii Fit Plus I bought came in a large box that included a Yoga pad, the balance board, and the game, plus I got Wii Ski free.
My kids have played Mario at their friends' houses, and I didn't even try to fight that one--I don't want to imagine their faces Friday morning if they saw a Wii with only "daddy's shooting games" and "mommy's exercising games."
I'm still hoping to run across RE4 and I'll look out for Monster Lab-- the short vid at Amazon looks fun.
