What is the Formula for Crafting Constructs?

3.5/d20/OGL

This is one of those things that has bothered me for years, but I have yet to get a definitive answer. I hope someone here can help me out.

The book says that crafting a construct is the same as crafting any other magic item. However, take a look at the clay golem. If you assume that it's a continuous magic item, with multiple abilities, its minimum price should be 421,500 gp (including the cost of the body). Yet the Monster Manual says 40,000 gp. So what's the deal? What am I missing?

There is no formula for creating custom constructs. The only way I know to do it is to find the closest model to what you want in a book, and adjust from there.

That might be the case, but I highly doubt it since the Fiend Folio errata says that it adjusts the formulas for crafting constructs based on the new 3.5 rules.

Edit: I should point out I'm still playing 3.5.

The rules are in the feat itself, but there is nothing for custom constructs. I know it's silly, but that is all they ever put out.

Quote:

Craft Construct [Item Creation]
Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Item.

Benefit:
A creature with this feat can create any construct whose prerequisites it meets. Enchanting a construct takes one day for each 1,000 gp in its market price. To enchant a construct, a spellcaster must spend 1/25 the item’s price in XP and use up raw materials costing half of this price (see individual construct monster entries for details).

A creature with this feat can repair constructs that have taken damage. In one day of work, the creature can repair up to 20 points of damage by expending 50 gp per point of damage repaired.

A newly created construct has average hit points for its Hit Dice.

Oh. Well that annoys me. :P

I'm guessing the low creation cost has something to do with the high probability of your construct being destroyed at some point and the cost to repair damage that it will inevitably take.

I’d have to look, but I’d also guess that you're unlikely to build a construct with enough hit dice to compete with monsters of an appropriate CR for your level. It probably works out to spending a feat and a lot of money for a decorative pet the ranger gets for free. Unless you have a really nice DM. :)

It would be nice to have seen a formula of some sort so that you could create all sorts of golems. But there are certianly alot of choices out there with Dragon magazines as well as various Manuals with a laundry list of golems. Makes the feat somewhat worthwhile. Though I have found as a character the time factor makes creating any golem or most items not overly practical. Our campaign we are constantly on the move does not always leave a bunch of downtime for item creation.

And on that note, this seems a good place to link the Mechonomicon.

For custom golems, I'd suggest going to the Mechonomicon, looking for whatever's closest to the mechanics you want, and tweaking from there.

Just glanced at this I will take a greater look at it later but an interesting resource of the golems out there currently thank you.

It is a start for the DM side of my gaming, but still would be nice to have some hard fast rules on the creation of golems over all.

I think it is a great resource for players whom are looking to see what goelms are currently out there to see what may be of interest with a quick comment on the pros and cons of the various types. Thank you again for that. For my player already I can see some of the headaches I can cause my dm. ha ha

Question: Assuming you get some rules to create new constructs or enhance already existing models, like Kismet´s (http://www.kismetrose.com/dnd/pdfs/KismetsConstructCreation.pdf, or the ones from Pathfinder (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/building-and-modifying-constructs)...

Would you allow a player to enhance an already existing construct? For example, he gets a Brass Man and tinkers it until he turns the criter into a Helmed Horror or a Battle Horror, or even a Nimblewright?.
