At least they reveal the data is from pre-Katrina. No way Louisiana is the happiest now. As a state resident, and specifically a resident of New Orleans, we are all terrified of crime and natural disasters. I had minor flooding just this week! Lack of industry and well paying jobs also bear on us. The Saints having a great season can only carry you so far.

Maryland, #40. Not cold by any stretch, so the higher temperature theory isn't too good. Maybe it's distance from politics? No, then we'd be #50 or 49. Hmm.
I don't know. I've been to Maryland and I view it as cold. Of course I'm from Texas so my view toward temperature is different than others. How about red state vs. blue state?

You're not the only Texan I've met who finds Maryland cold. I notice the temperature drop when I travel from the DC area to the Philly area; is the Northeast off-limits to Texans?
Red vs. blue? Could be....

Anything north of Tennessee is too cold for me. Some times of the year Tennessee pushes it.

Well, I am from Kentucky (35th on the list) but currently live in Virginia which is 28th on the list.

It could have something to do with temperature. A lot of people move to Arizona, Texas, and Florida because it is warmer and they want warmer weather. Most people moving to (or continuing to reside in) New York and the general Northeast have probably done so due to jobs despite not liking the weather.
With Maryland and (especially) the District of Columbia there are probably a lot of people who have moved there from a warmer area such as Texas and a lot who have moved there from a cooler spot such as New York. So, the temperature may cancel out for those regions and the results may be due to other factors.
Well, there is my two cents.
Oh yeah, Texas has Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels and that is enough to make me happy wer I to live there. New Braunfels is odd in that you can have the menu on the board in front of you written in three different languages (English, Spanish, and German) in the same restaurant. Odd combination, but it is part of the local flavor.

50 states and NY came in #51. If I wasn't unhappy before, I certainly am now. ;)
I thought you were joking til I clicked on the link.
:-/
Though even if the state ranked higher, I doubt New Yorkers would admit it.
"Oh, so you think your state is unhappy? Your state's a walk in the park. Lemme tell you about my state..."

I find the whole thing wonky... Louisiana is seriously the most happy state? At least they admit that their data could be skewed since it was collected before Katrina.
Louisiana is a fun place. Lots of parties and places to go gambling. That's probably why it is/was so high. Of course, I'm not so sure I would like to try to make a living there, especially post-Katrina.

Then how did Nevada end up so low on the totem at 39? Maybe it has more to do with happiness being measured as "contentedness" and not as actual happiness. The states that are lowest on the poll would be the ones I'd expect to be the most ambitious states.

Yeah, that killed my hypotheses. Like you said you have to take things like this with a grain of salt. It's sort of like studies that try to place the U.S. 30th something in the world in healthcare. Just nonsense.

Too true!

Yeah, those sons a beaches are truly miserable.
