Pewter minis look good, even unpainted. Plastic pre-painted figurines are cool too, especially for monster/critters. Yet, both are relatively pricy...
Is anyone using anything else to represent monsters/critters? Every year during Halloween, I mean to collect those 15 cents plastic spiders that end-up everywhere, but I always fail to do so. The dollar store sometimes have packages of plastic dinosaurs and animals that are more or less within scale.
Are there other good sources of cheap 'something' that can represent your typical band of orcs, swarm of vermin or pack of wolves?

I guess one can recognize another AFOL...
That being said, I have done exclusively Lego minifigs/critters games before... That was fun
Lego Castle and Viking is good for that.

Keep an eye out on vending machines when you walk into stores. Sometimes they have some interesting minis.
Almost all of my minis come out of vending machines.
Also, the Gormiti toys at target have packs of figs for that toyline/game, they usually are a bit bigger, good for Large size creatures. I think a 4 pack is $6.Also, Ben 10 has some figs that work for 1" scale medium creatures.
I also have a bunch of Bakugan figs that work great, they have good bases too. Figs sell for $3 each, also mostly for Large sized creatures.
Littlest Pet Shop is also another good source.
I also found a bunch of penguins, made out of erasure-like material, at some random toy/botique shop. $1 each.
Just check out all the weird places you would not think to have figs and you will be surprised.

I use the Clear or Colored Glass stones you pick up at Michael's or AC Moore(or Whatever crafts store you have close.) and then glue a picture to the backside so you can see what you are fighting and I also have Green, red and light blue with numbers on the back so I can have multiple opponents of the same type. I paid 6.00 for a bag of 100 and then cut up old dragon magazines for the pictures.
