Introductory Pathfinder Campaign: Rise of the Runelords or Council of Thieves?

Rise of the Runelords

Hi all,

I will be running our first PFRPG campaign beginning next month and I can't decide which adventure path to use. I have the first book of both adventure paths but I was hoping to get advice from people that have played Rise of the Runelords and the beginning of Council of Thieves.

Any insight you can provide to support your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

My group is comprised of 8 adult players who all have extensive experience playing 3.5. Half the group first played PFRPG at Gen Con 09 and have since purchased the core book and begun to integrate the PFRPG ruleset into our current 3.5 Ptolus campaign.

I strongly rendorse Rise of the Runelords. While COT is OK, I think ROTR is better written and has a lot more iconic adventures. From the humor and basic town setting of Burnt Offerings to the Chilling Horror of Skinsaw and the disturbing adventures of Hook Mountain, ROTR has a great mix of RP and combat with a town that is a bit more sympathetic and well developed.

However, mind that RotRL can be a very tough AP in places. Given that you are running it for 8 players it shouldn't be that bad, but still some encounters are killer (erm, boss of 2nd adventure).

At this point I would personally run RotRL - for two major reasons.

1. It's the first AP and the Paizo forum is full of amazing advice, support material, errata, handouts and developer commentary. Heck, even I made one gaming aid for this one.

2. CoT is halfway out, and I personally prefer running APs after I have all six books and a full view on the storyline (this dodges the "great, I killed off an NPC in adventure 1 and he is critical to the plot" problem).
