OMG! That roll FTW!

damage:
3d10 ⇒ (9, 5, 4) = 183d10 ⇒ (5, 6, 10) = 21
Is that the right number of dice? I'm guessing but I"m not sure.

Benny is amazed at his luck as he fires two shots into the giant bird's mouth as it attacks him.

[jawdrop] Holy schnikies...

Spoiler:
Okay, the bird's DV is 5 on this tick thanks to wond penalties, and it looks like you managed 14 successes on 7 dice [goggle again], plus the two-shot tactic reduces the bird's DV by an extra -1. So that's 10 extra successes on each shot, on top of the base damage of 3. The bird's lethal soak is 7L against your gun, so your pool is 3 (base) + 10 (successes) - 7 (soak) = 6 dice of damage per shot. So roll three more dice for each shot.

The bird is going to make another attempt to snatch you up at the same time, which might explain why it was so easy for you to bury your gun in its brain...

The eagle's talons stretch out, striking sparks from the top of the car as they drag over it before trying to close on Benny's chest.

Giving myself two dice for the stunt. Grapple attack is 11 dice against Benny's current DV of 5 (reduced by 1 from base of 6 because of Aim action): 11d10 ⇒ (5, 6, 10, 6, 8, 2, 10, 3, 7, 5, 7) = 69 plus 2 automatic successes, for a total of 9. It looks like Benny's base bashing soak is 4, and I don't think he was driving with his bulletproof vest on (though we'll see if that changes!), so 4B is all the soak he's got. The clinch attack reduces Benny's soak by half (it's Piercing, just like his gun), so his soak here is 2B. That completely negates the eagle's Epic Strength successes, leaving 6 (base) + 4 (successes) = 10 dice of damage: 10d10 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 4, 10, 1, 7, 5, 9, 1) = 47. Benny takes 4 Health Levels of Bashing damage.

extra damage:
3d10 ⇒ (2, 5, 8) = 153d10 ⇒ (10, 1, 4) = 15
How is it 14 success? I see 9 by the dice roll? Still new with this...

Benny Nomura wrote:

Spoiler:
9 on the dice, plus 3 for your Legend, 1 for the Willpower and 1 for your Epic Dex.

With Benny in its clutches, the bird starts to lift into the air, but a pair of loud crackc echo from Benny's pistol, and the eagle jerks spasmodically... and collapses to the desert soil, releasing Benny to roll across the sand until he comes to a stop against a large rock.

End of combat. There is a dead eagle the size of a small airplane in front of you, a wrecked truck off to one side of you, an interstate on the other side of you, and a whole lot of desert pretty much everywhere in between.

Shisumo:

I've actually checked up on this a couple of times over the last day, waiting for my turn and not quite realizing until now that it already was. So, I'd like to suggest that you consider concluding your posts with a quick comment along the lines of "Next Up @ T22: Ima, Red-fur; On Deck @ T23: Xoch". Just a thought...

T22:

Ima attempts to get past Red-fur's defensives with another quick kick.

Light unarmed attack: 8d10 + 1 auto => 8d10 ⇒ (9, 7, 9, 1, 9, 8, 7, 2) = 52 => 6 + 1 auto => 7 successes.

I believe that this is against a 4 Dodge DV (until T23), so that gives 3 successes. Adding this to her base damage pool of 3d10 for an unarmed light attack and subtracting the 3 points of Red-fur's lethal soak leaves her with 3 dice of damage

Damage: 3d10 => 3d10 ⇒ (3, 2, 6) = 11 => 0 successes.

Grrrr! I'm beginning to think that this character is going to be rather incapable in combat.

Yeah, it's a good idea - might help us all stay on track better. I've been trying to do it some, but if I make it a regular deal, it will probably help. Tick-based combat in PbP has turned out to be trickier than I imagined it would be going into it, though I think the trouble is exacerbated by having two combats going on simultaneously and in spoilers to boot... Fortunately, we're getting near the end of both of those things, so we'll see what happens.

Airplane peeps:

Spoiler:
Tick 21:
Grey-fur takes a step to the side, putting his back to the airplane door, hoping to not be caught between Xochipilli and Trent.

Tick 22:
Ima throws another quick kick at her red-furred opponent, but the blow appears to be absorbed by the monster's thick hide.

Next actions:
Tick 23: Red-fur, Xochipilli
Tick 24: Trent
Tick 25: Grey-fur
Tick 26: Ima

Tick 23 is up.

Male

Spoiler:
Now that I'm not being threating I'm going to attempt to coordinate our attacks (speed 5).

Chr+Command = 5d10 ⇒ (8, 2, 4, 9, 7) = 30 3 successes. I pick Ima and Trent obviously and 4 regular people near red-fur.

Now moveing on tick 28.

Airplaners:

Spoiler:
Xoch: You have to choose a specific opponent to coordinate the attack on, and there are two remaining (Red-fur and Grey-fur). Do you want to wait, or are you planning to pick one of the two and hope that Ima and Trent will go along with your plan?

I search for my cell phone among the debris.
I collect some feathers as indicated by my uncle saying they can have the ability to grant me access to their power. Using the GM hint given to me earlier.
I'll collect my stuff (dufflebag).
Assuming my cell phone is found and working.
I'll call the # in phoenix, leave a message saying I'll be late.
Then I'll call AAA to arrange for a tow-truck.
I'll pray to my father saying I was attacked by a giant bird. I'm alright and have no idea what to do about the bird body.
Then I'll go out to the highway to await my tow-truck. If not able to get a hold of one, I'll go to the side of the highway and wait/look for a tow-truck or police car or helpful citizen.
Thinking, "What the hell was that...?"
Puts a hat on to keep the sun out of my eyes.
I'll adjust my char now that combat is over. (Didn't want to change it mid-combat.)

Spoiler:
As Benny pulls his cell phone from the wreck of his truck, he notices an Arizona Highway Patrol car has stopped at the edge of the highway where he pulled off the interstate. Two officers are heading down the embankment - one is speaking into his shoulder radio, while the other calls out, "Hey there! You all right?"

I'm going to assume Benny has put his gun in his bag by this point.

As the two get closer, Benny can see theit expressions as they take in the scene: the truck, front axle snapped and shattered glass, dents and talon-scrapes all around; the corpse of the eagle, all 20 ft wingspan and claws like machetes; and Benny himself, clothes town, dirty and a little bloodied. Almost as one, the jaws of the two men fall slowly open. One whispers, "Madre de Dios," and the other says, more or less simultaneously, "What the hell...?"

Scions on a Plane:

Spoiler:
Xoch calls out instructions to Ima, hoping to work with her to take down her red-furred foe. He does the same for some of the airplane's other passengers, but they seem largely unwilling to get involved.

Note that Xoch can coordinate himself against Red-fur if he would like. Also that anyone hoping to use Xoch's coordination bonus will need to go on Tick 28, so Ima would have to delay via a Guard or Aim.

"Kill.. you...!" roars the red-furred wolf-woman, spittle and blood flying from her maw, as she snaps her teeth toward Ima's throat once more. Spending Willpower for another Malice Virtue channel, which makes her attack 9 dice, with 1 autosuccess, against Ima's DV of 5: 9d10 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 9, 4, 6, 7, 7, 9) = 48. 5 successes total, not quite enough. Unimpressed by the wolf-woman's rage, Ima sidesteps her gnashing teeth and readies another attack. Red-fur's DV is 4 until her next action, which will be on Tick 28. Her soak is still 1A/3L/5B.

Next actions:
Tick 24: Trent
Tick 25: Grey-fur
Tick 26: Ima
Tick 27: --
Tick 28: Red-fur, Xoch

Tick 24 is up. Trent.

Male

Spoiler:
I thought I was automatically included in the coordinated attack. Do I get an attack roll on tick 23 or 28?

Xochipilli Tocal wrote:
** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
Nope - you have to choose to include yourself. Not that it's a big deal to do so under these circumstances, anyway. And you would have had to declare a multiple action in order to attack on tick 23, so you're waiting until tick 28 now.

"Hi officers.
Former Staff Sergeant Benny Nomura." I extend my hand out to them.
"I am hoping you can help me out."

Benny:

Spoiler:
One of the officers, named Guitierrez, takes your hand, while the other moves to examine the massive bird. He whistles, then turns to look over your truck. "Take a look at this, Oscar," he calls to Guitierrez, who steps away for his own examination. The second cop, whose badge reads Halloway, comes over. "You carrying a gun on you, sir? Looks like that bird was shot with a pistol. Mind telling us what happened here?"

Tick 24:
Trent seeing he has a slight advantage will take the fight to the beast. He will punch the Grey furred attacker. This will be a light unarmed attack so that will be 7 dice +2 for Epic Dex 7d10 ⇒ (5, 2, 7, 9, 5, 9, 4) = 41 for a total of 5 successes... I think that beats his DV.Trent will also be ready to burn a Legend for Sky's Grace if Grey-fur gets desperate enough to open the door. Trent will also call out warning to the passengers.

"Everyone needs to buckle in to their seats now!"

Everyone have a safe and happy Holiday.

gm:
"Sure thing Officer Halloway. I'm driving along the highway and that big bird attacked me. I drove off the road to get away from the pedestrians. I pulled out my weapon and put 6 bullets into it before it grabbed me. Though, it grabbed me the same time I put the last two in it's mouth. The first fly by it got my car on the second it picked up the whole thing then dropped her. I had already got out by then. Isure hope I can fix her up.
My weapon is my army issue Baretta. It's in my bag. (pointing to it.) On the ground next to me. I have my permit in the car.

Airplane:

Spoiler:
Trent: That hits. Your damage pool is 2 (Strength) + 1 (success) - 5 (bashing soak) = 0, but with a minimum of your Legend rating. So you can roll 3 dice for damage.

Benny:

Spoiler:
Halloway checks the bag for the pistol, then retrieves your permit from the truck. The whole time, Guitierrez keeps walking around the eagle, shaking his head. Finally, Halloway calls his station, and after a brief conversation tells you, "We've got a truck on the way to try to scrape your vehicle off the sand, and another one to collect the, ah, remains. Once they get here, we can give you a lift. Where you headed?"

I'll get out my digital camera and take some pics of the bird and my car, for the insurance report.

"I'm needing to get to the Phoenix airport to meet a flight. If you could help me get there that would much appreciated. I would hate to miss it."

Not sure how long this 'adventure' has put my back time-wise but I did leave early since I was driving.

Airplane folks:

Spoiler:
Trent's quick punch produces little effect, making contact but seemingly absorbed by the thick hide of the wolf-man. His grey-furred opponent grins fiercely in response.

Trent's next action is on Tick 28.

Tick 25:
Rather than follow up immediately on Trent's failed attack, the grey-furred wolf-man makes a few simple testing swings, looking for a weakness in Trent's defenses.

Aiming. DV is 4, action can be Interrupted, but will otherwise last until Tick 28.

Tick 26:
Ima prepares herself for the attack she knows she will be launching alongside Xochipilli.

Grey-fur keeps Aiming.

Tick 27:
Grey-fur Aims for his third tick, Ima Guards.

Tick 28: EVERYONE GOES.

If Xoch and Ima work together against Red-fur, they will reduce her DV to 3. The soaks of both wolf-men are 1A/3L/5B, and both have a DV of 5 (but see above re: the Coordinated Attack).

Benny:

Spoiler:
The officers nod, and as the tow truck arrives on the scene, Benny begins to speed down the highway toward Phoenix, comforted by promises to see the truck brought there as well, as fast as they can manage it. The cops would like to take Benny to a hospital first, but knowing that to do so would make him miss the flight he's hoping to meet, Benny refuses.

Roughly two hours later, and just as the plane is expected to touch down, the cruiser arrives at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Almost immediately, however, there are signs that something is wrong - numerous police vehicles from the Phoenix PD surround one of the terminals, and it seems no real surprise when Benny realizes it's the terminal where the flight he was supposed to be on should have just landed...

Spoiler:
"Strike now senorita while I distract the titan spawn".

Attack 7d10 ⇒ (7, 10, 7, 4, 1, 2, 9) = 40 5 succeses -3 (red-furs DV) = 2 total successes.

Damage 4d10 ⇒ (4, 7, 9, 2) = 22 2 successes +2 automatic (epic str.) -3 (red-fur's soak) = 1 success

Xochipilli Tocal wrote:
** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
You're shorting yourself damage again. ;) The damage step works like this: 1) figure raw damage (weapon + Str + successes) and any autosuccesses from Epic Str and the like; 2) reduce autosuccesses with soak on a one-for-one basis; 3) apply remaining soak to the dice pool (not the successes), to a minimum of the attacker's Legend; 4) roll the damage pool, as reduced by the soak, and apply the successes as Health Levels of damage.

So it should work like this for that attack: raw damage = 4 (Strength) + 2 (weapon) + 2 (successes) = 8 dice plus 2 autosuccesses against lethal soak of 3; 2 points of lethal soak negate the 2 autosuccesses; 1 remaining point of soak reduces damage pool by 1; and you then roll the remaining 7 dice. So the four dice you rolled have already given you 2 successes, and you can roll 3 more in hopes of getting additional successes. Make sense?

Spoiler:

I forgot to add my Str for the damage roll, sorry. 3d10 ⇒ (1, 10, 1) = 12 2 extra successes for damge giving a total of 3

Also on tick 28 when all combative hell breaks loose:
Trent will throw a punch at the Grey-furred assailant. Knowing that things are going to get hinky really quick, Trent will use a Heavy unarmed attack. He will also use another Willpower to give a success and to make sure I don't botch this. So That will be 5 dice +2 for Epic Dex and +1 for Willpower. 5d10 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 7, 10) = 24 Which gives me 6 successes So with his DV of 4 that gives me 2 successes. So I would roll Seven normally but he reduces by 5 so I get two dice to roll for bashing. 2d10 ⇒ (3, 10) = 13 for two successes. So two Bashing to Grey and Ugly. I am sure he will be hitting me as hard if not harder.

"Oh this is going to suck.

Soak can't reduce your pool below your Legend score, so you can roll one extra die, just in case.

Soarin':

Spoiler:
At the front of the plane, Trent manages to land another punch; it rocks his grey-furred opponent back, but the monster doesn't fall. At the same time, the beast-man swipes with both its claws, roaring in frustration and rage. Spending a Willpower to channel Malice, adding three dice for Aiming and losing 4 dice for performing two claw attacks, for a total of 9 dice with one autosuccess - Trent's DV is reduced by 1 against these attacks: 9d10 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 8, 1, 5, 10, 10, 6) = 50, for a total of 6 successes, not nearly enough.

Near the plane's rear exit, Xochipilli lashes out with his scalpel, drivig it deep into the red-furred wolf-woman's hide. he draws it back bloody, and she screams in agony. Even as he does so, however, she lashes out once more at Ima, trying to find some purchase for her talons. Red-fur is out of tricks, so she's just attacking; she has 7 dice with one autosuccess: 7d10 ⇒ (8, 7, 4, 8, 4, 10, 6) = 47, for a total of 6 successes; this just barely misses Ima.

"I hope all of the activity doesn't effect my flight."

Halloway and Guitierrez shake Benny's hand firmly, Halloway also offering him a slight tip of the hat. "Radio says the United terminal is in lockdown, so if that's where you're headed, you might need to check into some other arrangements," Halloway tells him. "Otherwise, we'll be in touch if we need anything. Keep your eyes on the sky!" He laughs, and the patrol car pulls away.

T&M seems to have wandered off... Anyone want to post an action for Ima?

Frequent Flyers:
Taking her cue from the mexican man with the scalpel, Ima kicks again, driving the heel of her boot at Red-fur's sternum.

Light unarmed attack: 8d10 + 1 auto => 8d10 ⇒ (8, 2, 8, 8, 6, 1, 8, 7) = 48 => 5 + 1 auto => 6 successes.

Against a 3 Dodge DV (due to coordinated attack), that gives 3 successes. Adding this to her base damage pool of 3d10 for an unarmed light attack and subtracting the 3 points of Red-fur's lethal soak leaves her with 3 dice of damage (sounds familiar).

Damage: 3d10 => 3d10 ⇒ (8, 3, 9) = 20 => 2 successes of lethal damage. (Yay!)

Airport:
Is the whole terminal blocked off?
Can I get to the United ticket counter?

Air lions:
Ima feels the breeze from the red-furred wolf-woman's talons as she twists into her kick, but the sense of contact as her bootheel strikes the thing's chest is solid and extremely satisfying. Something makes a wet crunch sound inside the monster's chest, and she collapses, making gurgling choking sounds. After a moment, she undergoes the same transformation as have the other two, reverting back into a college age woman in t-shirt and faded jeans, lying on a wolf pelt.

It looks like everyone goes again on Tick 32. Only Grey-fur is left for the bad guys, though. Feel free to go ahead and post your next actions.

Seeing the last of his allies fall, the grey-furred wolf-man falls back toward the airplane door, bracing himself against it. His paw tightens on the emergency release bar. "You cannot stop Fate!" he roars, spittle flying toward Trent. "The Great Waters will come once more and cleanse this world!"

In the next couple ticks before everyone's actions refresh, Grey-fur Moves to get right next to the door...

Benny:
All eight of the main exterior doors to the terminal are barricaded off at the moment, and the United ticket counter is inside so no, you can't get to it directly. The terminal is a two-story building, rectangular, about 100 feet north-south and at least 6 times that east-west. It is set in an artificial depression, allowing the second floor to be actually at ground level and thus hold all the boarding gates (since it's at the same level as the runways).

Tick 32:
"Fate is a fickle mistress. One way or another we all serve her."

With that Trent takes a step on the nearest seat towards the door. Using the height and momentum to attempting a flying drop kick upon the Grey furred assailant. This will be a heavy unarmed attack. Trent will blow a Willpower to make sure that it is not botched. So that will be 5 dice with +3 auto successes for Dex and Willpower. 5d10 ⇒ (1, 10, 8, 2, 1) = 22, That will be 6 successes minus his DV 5 That leaves me with two successes, as I got his DV or more in successes. This would leave me a total of 8 dice to roll minus 5 for his soak and leave me with 3 to roll. 3d10 ⇒ (10, 8, 4) = 22, for 3 bashing.

Spoiler:
Charge and attempt to tackle grey-fur and keep him opening the door.

Attack 6d10 ⇒ (7, 3, 4, 9, 8, 2) = 33 only 3 successes.

Airplane:
Xoch: You can (and should, I think) use Strength in place of Dexterity when making clinch attacks like your tackle. This would allow you to both roll an extra die as well as get the benefits of your Epic Strength on the attack roll.
