Hideous problems with an .xls file

Off-Topic Discussions

Okay, I'm only a passable computer user -- I admit it. I can type up a polished document in Word, I can surf the Internet pretty easily, and I play a mean game of WoW ;).

But when it comes to the technical aspects, I'm like a driver who can drive their car well, but has no idea how the thing actually works, or how to fix it when something goes wrong.

So, I'm going to post a plea for help here in the hopes that some kind Paizonian will drop a helpful hint or two my way. Please!

THE PROBLEM: I've been sent an .xls file by a client, who needs to have the information I've typed up for them (my travel writing, in case you're curious) put into the file in the appropriate columns.

Now, I have Quattro Pro 12 and I can create, open, and edit my own .xls documents. However, when I try to open the client's document, I get the following error message (this is exactly what it says):

Error reading a file: C:\Documents and Settings\Carnivorous Bean\Desktop\Assignment 3 Folder\afukdestinations.xls

(I put in Carnivorous Bean in place of my real name ;) ....)

So, does anyone have any idea what is going on? I did a complete reinstall of Quattro Pro and it didn't help.

Maybe he's using a later version MS Excel/Office than QP can open. Can you download and install the free Excel viewer?

If the viewer doesn't open it, it's probably a trucated or corrupt file. If the viewer does open it, but QP won't, you might try downloading and installing the latest version of OpenOffice (you'll need the Calc app).

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Agreed. The file could be corrupt. I second the Open Office attempt. I am Microsoft Office free three years now. If it were not for all the games, I would dump Microsoft altogether.

Many thanks, I'll try that out .... I was just beginning to think that nobody knew anything more than I did, but Ambrosia Slaad to the rescue! Huzzah!!! =)

I think the crexy Mr. CourtFool would've pointed you in the right direction.

Let's hear a round of applause for the poodle, then, too! :))

Crex n. 1. a genus of birds including the corncrake (Crex crex).

Typo or are you calling me flighty?

It's from another thread. It's supposed to be a mashup of creepy and sexy. :)

Nope, just using the new word the Patrick coined.

Awww, thank you Ambrosia.

Licks Ambrosia Slaad.

This past weekend, I burned myself a shiny copy of PCLinuxOS w/KDE Desktop onto a CD. After one misstep and burning a second copy because I thought the first one was corrupt, I was able to boot an old Windows laptop I had laying around.

Another annoyance, quickly resolved with a search on the forums (stupid volume bar). I was up and running in KDE. I was underwhelmed by the provided light version of Open Office, but what do I expect for running everything off a single 700 MB disk?

I do most stuff online anyway, so I took it for a spin on its Mozilla browser. I have long since switched to Mozilla on my Windows machine, so I figured I would be right at home. I tried popcap games which just kind of hung. I am thinking I would need to install Java to get things working. I am not sure how I would do that since everything is running off of the CD.

So next I hoped over to Winamp. Crash. What the…?! Open Mozilla and try again. Crash. Again. Crash. Grrrr. I smell something French. 0 for 2 is not really impressing me. Then I thought, hey, this could be a good way to recover things from a hard drive…you know…since it was actually one of the things advertised on the site. So I try to find something equivalent to Windows Explorer. Enough poking and I find something, except all it shows me is the CD.

15 minutes of poking around brang me no closer to figuring out how to mount, if, indeed, that is what I needed to do, the hard drive so I could poke around at the Windows directories and prove the concept.

Is PCLinuxOS epic fail? Hardly. I have not poked around with Linux in (starts counting on fingers, then toes), well, a while. There is obviously a learning curve. Unfortunately, I do not think I have the time right now to learn a new OS.

I did really like booting up from a CD. If I could customize the CD more (which I am pretty sure I can, I seem to recall some discussion on the forums on how to do that) I think I would be quite pleased. A little more robust version of Open Office and the Java needed to play on Popcap. Things can be a little slow when the CD has to spin up every time you launch a new application. On the other hand, can you say nearly untraceable? I did not have to install anything on the beleaguered laptop. Not to mention that old laptop is password protected and I have long since forgotten the password.

Spend three hours re-installing Windows or pop in a CD and start surfing the web? Hmmm.

I've been rocking the eeeBuntu Base distro on my netbook for months now, at it's the bees knees. Obviously, it helps greatly that almost 99% of all the packages and drivers I needed for the netbook came with the distro (you can put the iso on flash drive, btw).

I'm pretty comfortable with other flavors of Ubuntu as well, but cannot really offer any advice on PCLinuxOS, other than to say not all flavors of Linux are equally delicious.

Did your CD contain GParted? it's a fairly robust partition manager.

Not that I am aware of.

What office suite do you use on eeeBuntu Base? Does it have Java so I can surf all my favorite websites with all the bells and whistles?

A quick scan at their homepage reveals no office and no Java, if I am reading correctly.

Base does not include Open Office, Standard or NBR (Netbook remix) do. I believe the Java runtime environment is supported and included in all distros, but I do recall having to add in the latest version of Flash through the package manager (synaptic), which took about a minute, tops.

With updates/upgrades, the standard distro comes in at over 2.5GB, which is why I went with the base install on my netbook (4G internal SSD, expanded by an 8GB SD card). If you have more HD space available, or can use a larger capacity flash drive, Standard is probably a better option (you can run it off of a flash drive). You may also want to try the "normal" Ubuntu distro, as it is more generic and perhaps will offer better driver support. eeeBuntu is really focused at the eeePC / Atom processor netbook crowd.

Cheers!
