PaizoCon III Paper Minis Previews

Hey gang,

In an earlier thread, I had made mention of producing a few 3-D Pathfinder Paper Minis sets to be previewed at PaizoCon III and released after the Con is over. The current plans include a Colossal silver dragon (suggested by Sharoth), and Treerazer (set to compete with Lillith's Treerazer in a battle I call "Duelin' 'Razers"). I figure I should have enough time to do a third set for viewing/manhandling at PaizoCon III, but I've got one problem: what should I make?

So, any suggestions? The limiting factors on your choices are:

1): It must be Huge or larger. No requests for detailed 3-D imps please. The ordinary 2-D Tiny figures are hard enough to cut out, thanks. :P

2: It must be a Pathfinder or OGL critter. I've got my license with Paizo, and that's who I produce sets for. Anything from the Bestiary, the Pathfinder APs, or any of the other books where monsters doth dwell is good by me.

So, let me know what you want to see, and I'll see what I can do! I'll be posting links to scans and photos when they become available, and bringing the final versions to the Con for up-close-and-personal viewing. Shortly afterward, I'll put the sets up for sale online, and y'all will get a chance to fill your house with 'em. :D

Sound good? Good. Well, let's get the suggestion ball rolling!

You requested a collosal silver dragon. You could request a gargantuan one too!

What about something from the Adventure Paths, like a Rune Giant?

is Cthulhu OGL? Ok then how about a troll war party? Oh just one Mini.... Dragons and Giants... a Giant who is riding a dragon!!!!!! Or maybe an alternate Silver Dragon who is being muzzled and lead on a lease by a werewolf? Nah nothing so close to reality.

Heh. I've had the Tarrasque on my "must make" list for, damn, almost a year now? I actually e-mailed the Paizo guys and/or mentioned it in a Paizo chat about this time last year, trying to get a feel for how their version of the Tarrasque might look. 'Course, my copy of the Bestiary's in the mail now, so I s'pose I'll find out when it shows up. :D

Hmmm... I could... I'll keep that in the "maybe" pile. It most certainly will get the minis treatment at some point in time, just not sure if it really "pops" for me as a super-fancy mini to show off.

Kyle Baird wrote:

The silver dragon will be done as Colossal, then re-scaled to different sizes (Gargantuan, Huge), with the Large and under sizes being done with different art in standard "flat" versions. I'll be hooking up Sharoth with a pre-built Colossal (don't worry, he's paying for it :D ), with another one to be passed around and "ooh"'ed and "ahh"'ed over, and he'll get a copy of the set, so he can have a whole silver dragon family, if he so chooses. :D

That could work, and I've got my old black and white 3-D rune giant to use as a reference. I do plan on doing rune giants eventually, so that might be my default if I start running out of time or something.

Either way, I'll pack up the old one and bring him along to PaizoCon again this year. Even a year and a half old, and beat up from a recent move, he's still pretty darn impressive.

Heh.

I dunno about Cthulhu's IP status- Chaosium might own the rights to any gaming-industry-related usage of Cthulhu. But I might make one sometime, just for kicks.

It's good. It's not the best piece of art in the book, but good none the less.

Hmmm... good, but I think we can do something cooler. Something that says, "I'm one of the biggest, baddest things in the Pathfinder universe." The Tarrasque is definitely on my list, as are the other Spawn of Rovagug (eventually). I'm also talking stuff like Achaekek, He Who Walks in Blood. Or Sabina Merrin riding Zarmangarof. Ahriman. Rune giants. Or some of the deity's heralds. I'd even suggest Jhavhul, but I'm gonna do a really awesome mini for him soon for LoF.

I mean, the nasty, iconic monsters (the stuff in the Bestiary, plus innumerable others from other Pathfinder products) will get covered eventually in the Bestiary sets coming up soon. But the earth-shaking monstrosities, the the servants of the divine bursting with holy (or unholy) energies, that which humanoids were not meant to know- the stuff that makes the fighter have to clean the urine out of his boots, that's what I'm looking for.

I like the way you think, Hugo.

Maybe for PaizoCon 10. :P

D'oh! I wish I'd read your initial post more closely. I wouldn't have suggested the bulette. Sorry.

I'd still like to see Treerazer. Maybe the drunken treant from Neil's Realm of the Fellnight Queen module, if you've got time. :)

It's all good. No offense intended. :)

Treerazer is on the "must be done" list. Hell, I got a half-finished version on my computer from last year. A bit of revision, and it should be ready to rock. I just hope I don't have to give up Benchak's old coloring job on him; that was mighty fine.

I also have a special Treerazer that will be making an appearance sometime. You'll know it when you see it. :D

As for Realm of the Fellnight Queen, well, I ain't read it (my old roommate got the Gamemastery/Pathfinder solo modules; I do the APs and the Pathfinder Companion stuff, plus assorted other Pathfinder goodies). I'll see if he's got plans to run it, though, and if not, I'll take a gander.

I just hope it doesn't make me re-think my Linnorm Kings side-campaign. I'd hate to lose the chance to re-use my Lady Winter, Ejja Frostheart.

Make it something many games will use, bonus points if it's something PCs will want to use. I'm thinking an elemental or treant would be a good idea.

Something like the tarrasque would be amusing but it's not terribly practical.

Wickham, you little sass-monkey. I'll anthropomorphize YOU, I will. :P

Sabina riding Zarmangarof will make an appearance. I'll keep the now-fourth slot open for now. Though I'm diggin' some of the suggestions so far.

Eyebite wrote:

Oooh... nagas. Hmm. Are any of the nagas Huge? Or would I be doing a HD-advanced version? Might not be a bad call for the naga set.

OH NOEZ! The MIBs has FOUNDS ME! Quick, hide the fraal-crafted alien miniatures technologies! :P

Like I've said, the stuff in the Bestiary will get jumped on at some point in time. Now that I've got the time cleared out, I'll be finally finishing up the LoF sets, then moving on to Bestiary monsters, NPCs, and character minis. There might even be some 3-D sets out before PaizoCon III.

I'm definitely torn on the Pragmatic vs. Cool issue. I hope to hit a nice balance between both, but I'm willing to sacrifice pragmatism for a really cool mini; after all, these are the guys that I'm hoping will make people want to look at the other sets available.

Plus, I'm talking about a price probable point of $9.99 for a dragon of every size of a specific color (say, silver, since that one's gonna be there at PaizoCon), with every color of dragon eventually getting a set. They'll be the high-end purchase for my minis line, but they'll also be fancy 3-D minis, and the Colossals will probably look pretty cool topping off a shelf of Pathfinder books. I mean, heck, my old rune giant's still pretty eye-catching, and my art style has improved a lot over the last year. Just imagine him with the clean lines and gorgeous colors exemplified in, oh, say, the latest piece for art for my character in Council of Thieves, Cheng Wen.

If people want something more pragmatic, though, I shall not argue. Treerazer, Colossal silver dragon, Sabina on Zarmangarof, and... something else. Hrmm...

Damn, I'm kinda liking that Naga idea. Might not be the most dynamic of all the minis, but I could make a real cool-colored version of one. Any of the Pathfinder nagas real tropical-colored? Or should I save that for an eventual Protean set?

Side note, Eyebite- I did a hydra for my Savage Tide game. And a yuan-ti anathema. That was an interesting project. I made it with each head as an individual piece. Damn heads kept coming off. Probably would've been cinematic had it not wiped the floor with the group. Ended up pulling a deus ex machina and sending one of their former traveling companions (I happened to have a copy of her character sheet, leveled up to their level) show up and blast the damn thing with disintegrates until it finally failed a save.

I'll figure out a more efficient multi-head option by the time I do more hydras, I swear. :P

Sneaky-peek preview of one tiny part of the Sabina/Zarmangarof mini is available here. It's basically two pieces put together in Photoshop to make a simple sample image. The backside of Sabina will probably be black on the initial set since I still have not mastered double-sided minis (aside from some parts of 3-D minis; Zarmangarof will be double-sided on all fronts). But Sabina's backside makes up, oh, say, 10% of the total mini, and it's got big-ass dragon wings behind it, so there's better stuff to look at. :P

It would be awesome to see/have a Neothelid mini N'wah.

I'll see what develops. I'm buried in art stuff at the moment, but I hope to have at least some photos up to show off.

Or I'll make you all wait 'til June. :P

Either way, there will be some fun stuff to see by then! :D

I'd love to see more monster paper minis.

(I'm not sure when I would ever use a Colossal Silver Dragon unless there is one in a module or AP I don't know about...)

But Krakens, Bulettes, Rune Giants, (Any Giants, actually, some nice Stone Giants for ROTR would be great), and whatever that thing is on the cover of Mother of Flies...all nice to use.

I'm using a lot your Goblin minis. But the way i cut them (I don't leave white spaces around them, i cut over the black stroke with a hobby knife) makes some more thin parts (like whips) fall down, maybe you should play attention to that.

But i must remember. You bring the minis, i use them. Yes, i'm a sucker for paper minis.

I just cut them out in a rectangle and assemble them in the standard "A-Frame" style like the old Steve Jackson Cardboard Heroes.

It does make a few models with large weapons take a bit more space (horsechopper goblins look a bit bigger), but they work well.

And I lve being able to carry 30 goblins for almost no weight...

The advantage for the way i cut is mostly cosmetically, it looks way better this way.

Alright, gonna try to hit all these in order. Lemme know if I miss anything.

gigglestick> I do want to do more monster minis. I'm letting Crystal take over Kingmaker (harder work ethic + insider advanced prep = get done on time), and I'm going to work on generic monsters and NPC/PC race sets. I want a nice solid bunch of goodies for folks to enjoy out, and I hope to get more going soon. Bet I could whip out a kobold set in a couple of days if I tried hard enough.

A calikang (the "Mother of Flies" thing) could prove fun, too, though they're only Large.

GoGoCharlie> Pathfinder drow don't do much spider-riding in the campaign. I do want to do a drow set sometime, though.

Tabris_> I'll try out some thicker outer lines for an upcoming set or two, see how they do. I'm pretty fine with that. Me, I likje the white outline, but my aesthetics are weird, and I'm hardly a Nazi about how I want people to assemble my stuff. Heck, I've been using double-sided tape for a while now when I assemble, and I love it compared to glue, so I don't even follow my own instructions. :P

1) Sounds great! When will these be available? (My ROTR players are going to encounter some Hellknights in a side plot)

2) I like Crystal's art too. Actually, though your styles are different, the minis look good together and have a similar feel.

3) More more more! (I've got to post some of the game pics from the Burnt Offerings Goblin battle)...
