Jester from Dragon Compendium

Liberty's Edge

I'm about to begin running Rise of the Runelords using PFRPG. One of my players is going to play a Jester from Dragon Compendium.

So far the adjustments I have made are:
-Increased hit die to d8
-Used the spell progression and spells known as PFRPG Bard using the Jester spell list
-Reduced the Perform(Comedy) skill rank prerequisites of all the Jester's Performance abilities by 3.
-Adjusted the skill list kept all skills it had before, dropped all the ones that don't exist anymore, and added skills that old ones were moved to.

To me, the class still seems underpowered(?). It lacks a capstone ability which isn't too important to me as I doubt we will make it to 20th.

The player said that an older version (first or second edition?) of the jester had an ability that if someone tried to scry, or read thoughts (not sure which or both maybe?) the caster had a chance to be affected by a confusion spell. I think that might not be a bad ability to add (at about 8th level?)

Anyway any thoughts?

Scarab Sages

I'd do this.

I did a version of my own, found Here.

It ended up similar to Tom's. And I completely stole his format when I was putting it all together :)

It seems the APG "Court Bard" archetype will do similarly, but from what I've seen it seems over-powered (mass flat-footedness if I'm not mistaken).

If anyone checks it out, let me know if you like it!

3.5 private scantuary podcast review this class a while back i believe, they talk about pathfinderizing it in the episode. Let me see if i can find the link.

Edit:
Yep here it is episode 122

Yep - that inspired me to do it actually. It's a great discussion (and the other class described there sounds even better actually).

The court bard class archetype in the Advanced Player's Guide $3 preview on the paizo blog seemed to make me think of the jester. Perhaps you could take a look at it for inspiration when the Advanced Player's Guide comes out?

As I noted above, I don't feel the court bard (as described in the blog at least), is particularly well balanced.

No matter what, a jester has to fight with a slapstick, a type of club that inflicts hideous laughter.

:D

Doh! I forgot to include the spell list. Updated the file.

Link still works to Here.

Prithee! I'faith, n'uncle, that if you paid $3 for that preview, you've been taken for a ride - and not one of the jolly good ones we have on fairs. Marry, you've been had.

Final bump from a few last changes.

There ddoesn't seem to be any bard quality that makes up for Jester's Audacity, though this is partially compensated by the jester not being able to apply both his dex and his cha at the same time. The bard has no special 4th level ability while the jester has the pratfal bonus feat.

In the spell list, you need to change polymorph. There is no more general polymorph spell anymore.

Thanks for the feedback!

Overcompensating for changes is a common problem I've seen with conversions/updates, so those feats might be too much. At the same time, I find the loss of the cure spells (and thus easy use of wands) to be a very big hit for them. Also I think Inspiring Quip, even as an immediate action, isn't quite as good as Inspire Courage. Plus Jester's Lore is distinctly inferior to Bardic Knowledge.

Yes there is. It wasn't in the Beta.
