Is there a 4e Primer or Cliff Notes?

4th Edition

Scarab Sages

Hey gang,

I find myself needing to know some 4e stuff.
Is there a Primer or Cliff Notes or Quickstart version out there?

If not, what are the basics I should read up on? (I can borrow the core books easily. I need to know what sections to cover.)

Quick-start rules and sample adventure. Enjoy.

There is a free downloadable quickstart version for the 4E rules available from the WotC website here.

In addition, this page has links to the demo version of the character builder plus some free adventures.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out.

If you can find it, Seeker95 on the Wizards boards has a list of the 4th Edition essentia in his signature - only those sections of the books which are critical to understanding how the game works.

Thanks Scott... I'll go searching for him and his sig.

It seems Wizbook broke it. I found him but he has no sig file anymore... :(

It's okay, I Googled it and pulled up their cached version of the signature - the relevant bits follow:

Minimum essentia in reading the PHB:

1. “Three Basic Rules” on page 11 (< 1 page)
2. “Power Types and Usage” on page 54 (< 1 page)
3. “Short Rest + Extended Rest” on page Page 263 (< 1 page)
4. "Combat" Chapter 9 (31 pages)
5. "Skills" Pages 178 and 179, from “Skill Training” to “Knowledge Skills” (< 2 pages)
6. "Feats" Page 192 (1 page)
7. "Conditions" Page 277 (1 page) c/o TheBouncyPherret
Total essentia: ~38 pages.

Now that you know what the rules are you can read the parts of the book that you skipped in whatever order you feel like.
