Running Season 0 scenarios...

GM Discussion

Liberty's Edge

My group of guys just recently decided to create characters and run them through the Season 0 PFS scenarios. We went ahead and made PFRPG characters instead of 3.5 characters, and updated the NPCs and Monsters in Silent Tide to conform to the new rules set.

However, now I'm wondering if this was a mistake? Should we continue to use 3.5 rules when running the Season 0 scenarios? The conversions were simple and they didn't change the difficulty of any of the encounters, as everything was balanced against the "higher" power levels for PFRPG PCs.

Anyway, I just wonder if this discussion has come up before, or if anyone had any idea how to handle it. I have not reported the results of the scenario yet, 'cause I still have a couple questions about that.

Any information here would be great. Thanks!

It has, and you did exactly the right thing. After August 13th, all the Pathfinder Society adventures should be run under the Pathfinder RPG rules.

Lantern Lodge 4/5

After 13th August 2009, players must create Pathfinder RPG characters (or convert their 3.5 characters over to Pathfinder RPG).

Although the GM may convert Season 0 encounters using the Conversion Guide, Joshua Frost (Events Manager) has stated you're not required to, since Pathfinder RPG is backwardly compatible with 3.5, you may continue to run Season 0 encounters as written.

What he said, But if you do run the scenarios as is, there may be times you will need to calculate the CMB/CMD of the stuff in the encounters.

Awesome! Thanks for the input, guys/gals. Now I feel a lot better about those decisions!

Lantern Lodge 4/5

I tried converting a Season 0 scenario on the fly during a game, using the Conversion Guide and the Bestiary Preview. For the most part, it was okay, consolidated skills worked fine, CMB/CMD were easy to calculate, and some creature types have an extra hp per HD.

I had to interrupt the game briefly to apply a Skeleton template to an Owlbear, which was more difficult than perhaps it should have been, but only because the players were all talking around me and I failed my concentration check. Though it's situations such as this where it would have been smoother to have used 3.5 statistics as written, instead of trying to convert.

Any skills, feats, spells, equipment (spiked chain) etc should be referenced directly from the Pathfinder RPG core rulebook, so even if running a Season 0 encounter, you are already using the Pathfinder RPG version of these.

Similarly, even if you're playing Season 0 encounters as written, you might want to take a brief moment to give your enemy cultists Negative Energy Bursts, or Rogue Talents to your enemy thugs, or Bloodlines to your enemy sorcerers, or an additional Feat to a 5th level character etc, just to show off some of the new features of the Pathfinder RPG. Most of these only require adding an extra ability to a 3.5 character, without having to taking time out to do a full statistical conversion.

The conversion I ran took almost no time. I downloaded, read, and converted everything I needed to convert in less than 3 hours total, not all of which were dedicated to prep/conversion. The NCP conversions were simple. All ability scores remained the same, just some tweaks with feats, skills, etc.

This was also the first game my group played with the new PFRPG rules, and it was AWESOME! I love this system. Thank God we're not playing 4E...
